Theoretical Framework of the Study

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction about the chapter here, do this every after a

topic or subtopic before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

In this chapter, the theoretical framework serves as an integral part of the study as it will

provide a particular and clear perspective through which to examine a topic (LibGuides:

Research Process: Researching Theoretical Frameworks, 2014). According to the University of

Southern California (2013), must demonstrate an understanding of theories and concepts that are

relevant to the topic of your research paper and that relate to the broader areas of knowledge

being considered. With this, the chapter would include the conceptual framework, operational

framework, assumptions, hypothesis, and the definition of terms used. All of these topics have

their own role in this study to further understand the study.

Conceptual Framework

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction here, do this every after a topic or subtopic

before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

In this particular part, the conceptual framework will be shown and discussed. The

conceptual framework shows and discusses the relationship of the variable in this particular

study (Swaen, 2015). It is based on a literature review of existing studies and theories about the

topic. These frameworks will be used to guide the researchers throughout the whole to study by

giving them a visual representation of their research.

[Mrs. Fernandes: Discuss the conceptual framework that you will use to guide you in

answer your statement of the problem here. You can show a diagram, image, illustration to help
3

the reader visualize the concept you are working on. Do not forget to comply with the APA 7th

edition format for tables and figures.

The rule for figures, check out the illustration below.

as you can see, the figure number is on top of the image, in bold fonts. Next line is the title of the

image, italicized but not bold. The discussion about the image must be written below the figure

or at least must start immediately below it while the continuation is on the following page.

You have to explain why you are using this conceptual framework and how it can help you better

answer your problem. Do not forget to use in-text citations for information that did not originally

come from you. Acknowledging the real authors in your discussion through in-text citations adds

credibility to your work, so do that.]

Figure 1

Modern Sustainability Development Theory Model (Ward & Dubos, 1972)

The study on the “One Stop Shop” idea as a sustainable Grab mobile application shall be

supported by the conceptual framework of Modern Sustainability Development Theory Model

formulated by economists Barbara Ward and Rene Dubos. It depicts in the model that

environmental protection, economic growth and social equity are somehow interconnected with

each other that will then produce or determine sustainable development at the end. The relative

balance of these goals and a long-term decision making orientation is the matrix of sustainability

(Kurry, 2011).

The concept of the aforementioned components were elaborated on Ward and Dubos'

book, "Only One Earth,” which was presented at the United Nations Conference on the Human

Environment in Stockholm in 1972. It clearly elaborates developmental goals based on Earth

5

Summit 1992 (Gould and Lewis, 2008, p.270). The relative collaboration and mixture of these

goals is a matrix for sustainability. In connection to the study, it meets the present status of the

subject without compromising the business climate and its trade area.

The term sustainable can be synonymous with having long-term goals. The presentation

of the framework for Sustainable Development will also become the back-bone of the study

which shall be adapted with specific components relative to One Stop Shop of Grab mobile

application. The tangible core reference is also an indication that there are governing elements to

attain sustainability.

Operational Framework

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction here, do this every after a topic or subtopic

before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

The operational framework is highly connected with the conceptual framework presented

in every research study. Zacharewicz (2018) mentioned that this kind of framework will serve as

a basis for all the researchers’ work, and most importantly, everything should be linked or

connected back to the original framework, the conceptual. Basically, this framework will provide

the researchers a specific criteria, path, steps, or methods that will help them achieve their goal

(Aboytes, 2017). With this, it can be provided that an operational framework is an essential part

of every research study.

[Mrs. Fernandes: In this subtopic, you have to illustrate how your topic interrelate with

the conceptual framework. Here you have to show your own interpretation of the conceptual

framework using independent variables, dependent variables, and even moderating variables.
6

Again, comply with the APA 7th edition format for figures, make sure the discussion

about the figure starts below the figure on the same page. Tip: use the information from your

related literature and stitch it with each hypothesis you came up, in explaining the independent,

dependent, and moderating variables.]

Figure 2

Sustainability Development Model of Grab Mobile Application

The framework presented in Figure 2 was modified and derived from the 1972

conceptual framework of Barbara Ward and Rene Dubos which is called the Modern

Sustainability Development Theory Model. It was constructed to be more applicable in the case
7

of Grab and for this study. With this, the Figure 2 shown above has different variables which

includes the independent, dependent, and moderating variables.

The model presents a 3-circle Venn diagram that shows how the elements of three sets

that were used to relate each other through the three overlapping circles. When these circles in a

Venn diagram overlap, the overlapping parts contain elements that are common to any two

circles or all the three circles (What is a 3-Circle Venn diagram?, 2021).

Starting from the three outer parts of the circles, customer satisfaction, multiple service

inspiration, and “one stop shop” innovation were presented. These factors serve as the

independent variables in the study as this is what the researchers manipulates or changes, and is

assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable (McLeod, 2019).

With this, the circles got interconnected and overlapped with each other. As customer

satisfaction and multiple service inspiration overlap, profitability binds them together. Multiple

service inspiration overlapping with “one stop shop” innovation then creates convenience.

Lastly, “one stop shop” innovation and customer satisfaction connects with effectiveness. In a

nutshell, profitability, convenience, and effectiveness will serve as the moderating variables that

will bind the independent and dependent variable together. After all the overlapping sections of

the circle, the final and biggest connection is presented in the middle which is Sustainability.

Sustainability will serve as the dependent variable as it is “dependent” on the independent

variable available. Basically, the result of being sustainable will really depend on the various

determinants or also known as the independent variables with the assistance of the moderating

variables.
8

Assumptions

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction here, do this every after a topic or subtopic

before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

Assumptions are usually regarded as unexamined beliefs which are then being considered

without realizing (Oden, 2020). Basically, these are statements that researchers presume as true

which can be foreseen through the researchers’ experiences or perspective. According to

Wolgemuth, Hicks, & Agosto (2017), researchers use these assumptions to develop theories,

research methods, and design and to influence the findings. With this, the researchers considered

three (3) assumptions in accordance with this research study. Do note that the following

assumptions that will be presented below are not in any way connected with each other and are

just pure predictions of the researchers based on the discipline of the topic as well as determine if

the researchers could have a conclusion from the data collected from the respondents.

[Mrs. Fernandes: itemized and discussed in detail the assumptions used. Assumptions are

instances or situations that are present or can be happening or premise that you are working on.

Example of an assumption is Covid-19 will continue on until 2022 wherein the face-to-face

classes may still be not allowed to happen – this is an assumption because it may affect that

study. It may look like a scope and limitation but this is more detailed and precise.

First assumption is that Grab will continue to maintain its position in the industry

regardless of an influx of different competitors in the market. The Grab mobile application is

considered as one of the most dominant super apps all throughout Asia specifically in the

Philippines as they are offering rides, food delivery and now, financial services. Which includes
9

loans, insurance, payments and investments - all accessed through a mobile app (Vaswani, 2021)

and a lot more online services compared to other apps. However, it can also be the other way

around. Grab can fail to maintain its position in the industry as well in the succeeding years.

Second, the "one stop shop" idea of Grab is considered more profitable during the time

when the COVID-19 pandemic. The reason behind this is that a lot of people are using and

patronizing the different services that Grab is offering because almost all the things that they

need can already be done through the app. Also, with the strict and heightened restrictions

imposed by the government, using a mobile app like buying groceries and paying your bills

would do the job for the consumer. Basically, convenience and accessibility can be the main

reasons that push customers into using Grab. With this, it will be a challenge for Grab to

maintain this scenario once everything goes back to normal where people can now go out freely

without any inhibitions.

Third and last, Grab will be able to come up and offer new services in their application

that will cater the needs and demands of their consumers. As every year passes, every company

must come up with something new within their products or services to help create a new space in

a seemingly crowded market. With identifying the gaps and imposing the company into a new

space, there could be a chance to satisfy their consumers in a new and refreshing way (Ghelber,

2019). With this, it is inevitable not to assume that Grab will definitely release something new to

their application to penetrate the market even more.

Hypothesis of the Study

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction here, do this every after a topic or subtopic

before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

10

A hypothesis is a specific statement of prediction. It describes in concrete (rather than

theoretical) terms what you expect will happen in the researcher’s study (Trochim, 2021).

Particularly, a hypothesis is an assumption which is an idea that is proposed for the sake of

testing if it would be true. A good hypothesis consists of a relationship between variables.

Understanding the variables will make the research simpler which fits more in the research

question. In this research, presented are three (3) hypotheses which are correlated with the three

(3) objectives, presented as follows,

[Mrs. Fernandes: Tip in coming up with hypotheses, go back to your objectives, for each

objective, negate that and make it as a hypothesis, and so on and so forth. So, if you have four

objectives, then you must have four hypotheses. When writing each hypothesis, include a short

discussion what that hypothesis is about followed by the authors and timeline (based on your

RRL) that support that hypothesis.

Example:

Ho1: The perceived convenience of accessing information anywhere and anytime through

online learning does not significantly affect the acceptability of the business students into e-

learning (Bagarinao, 2015; Hickey, 2015; Shin & Kang, 2015; Topal, 2016)]

Ho1: The factors connected to the Grab user’s satisfaction rate does not contribute to Grab

being sustainable (Deleryd & Fundin, 2020).

Ho2: The inspiration and reason behind the multiple services that the Grab application is

offering to its users does not influence the “one stop shop” idea. (Oleynick, Thrash,

LeFew, Moldovan, & Kiefaber, 2014)

11

Ho3: The innovations or continuous improvements that Grab is looking to ensure the financial

stability of the company in the long run does not affect the sustainable measure of the

Grab application (Visser, 2019).

Definition of Terms

[Mrs. Fernandes: write a short introduction here, do this every after a topic or subtopic

before showing the content of that topic or subtopic]

In this particular part, the definition of terms will be discussed where the components of

the study will have a detailed explanation that could help and better understand the research

study. All terms that would be included will be based on how the researchers used the terms in

this particular study.

[Mrs. Fernandes: itemized (without using numberings or bullets, instead use paragraphs

to separate each term with definitions) the terms used in this paper. Tip: it must be in

alphabetical order and make sure the reader can understand the term the way you are using it.

The definition of the term must be in conjunction with the definition found in the

dictionary at the same time described in a way it was used and understood in this paper. For

example, the study is about the marketing strategy of a school, then the word “Customer” must

be included in this section, the definition may include that it is used interchangeably with the

word “students”, the enrollees or those studying in the school, and also referred in this study as

the respondents.

Example:

Blended education
12

It is a combination of the traditional face-to-face communication with online learning

activities. Several schools and training centers use this method and find it to be effective,

especially for children who are more interested to learn through videos or activities that need the

use of computer.

Customers

In this study are the students or enrollees of the business programs, also termed as the

respondents.

Distance learning

It is a program designed for those who cannot come to study in campus. Online program is

one method of distance learning aside from the very first method of mailing the materials that

evolved through the use of radio and television, and at present, through the use of the internet.

E-learning

It is used interchangeably with online degree program, online learning, e-service delivery,

and electronic delivery of a bachelor’s degree program. This is when a student is not required to

meet the professor face-to-face. Lectures and communications are through chatrooms, emails,

lectures and discussions are done using a platform or a learning management system (LMS).

There are times that the student can make an appointment to meet the professor for

consultations. This suggests that although it is an online program, offices or centers are still

maintained for administration purposes. There are online programs that are also pre-recorded.
13

The flexibility in time is one of the main factors for the attractiveness of this program to those

who are already working but want to pursue higher education for professional advancement.

App/Application

An application is a software that performs specific tasks for an end-user. If the user is

interacting directly with a piece of software, it is application software. In this study it is termed

directly from its own meaning (Quickbase, 2020)

Competitors

Competitors are other businesses who can offer the same or similar goods and services to

your customers (Commerce Commission New Zealand, n.d.)

Consumer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is a metric that evaluates how satisfied customers are with a

business's products, services, and capabilities. Information on customer satisfaction, such as

surveys and ratings, can help a firm in determining how to enhance or adjust its products and

services (ASQ, 2021).

Convenience

Convenience is a state of being suitable or not causing any trouble to any parties.

Nowaday, convenience is used in business as a term for easy accessibility.

Customers
14

In this study the Customers are termed as the users of the Grab application where these

users are considered customers since they are using the Grab application to use the application’s

services(Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2021).

Effectiveness

Effectiveness means working on the “right” things—that is to say, things that drive

business value and move the needle on company goals. According to Maloney (2019),

effectiveness of an organization or company is a concept that measures how thoroughly and

efficiently a company achieves its business goals.

Grab

The word Grab in this study is termed as an application software where the users of this

application are the customers. Grab is a type of application where it offers a variety of products

and services such as food, door to door delivery services and transportation (Wee, 2017).

One Stop Shop

The one stop shop idea is defined as a firm or a business idea that offers a multitude of

products or services to its customers, all under one roof. It can refer to a company that handles a

variety of goods or services. In this particular study the One stop shop was termed as the idea of

business that could make the firm or business sustainable (Segal, 2021).

Profitability
15

A condition in which an entity generates a profit is known as profitability. When the total

amount of income in a reporting period exceeds the total number of expenses, the company is

profitable (Bragg, 2021).

Sustainability

The word sustainability is termed in this study as a goal of the business or the company.

The word sustainability is clearly defined as meeting the needs of the present without

compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Also the term sustainability

will be the objective in this study.
