Analysis:

Explain why the following are two strategies to mitigate climate change: to improve the
thermal efficiency of the power cycles that generate electricity, and to improve the efficiency
of the conversion of energy at the final end use.

Problems:

1. Consider a 1.0-m3 tank connected through a valve to a vertical cylinder fitted with a
frictionless piston. At the initial state, the tank contains water at 3500 kPa and 450°C, and
the cylinder contains water at 300 kPa in a volume of 0.1 m 3, with liquid occupying half of
the volume. Then, the valve opens and the system equilibrates when the volume of the
cylinder is 3.0 m3. Calculate the amount of heat transferred in the process.

2. A vertical cylinder open to the atmosphere is fitted with a frictionless piston that has a
linear spring attached to its upper face and the system is connected through a valve to a
line carrying steam at 1000 kPa and 350°C. When the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder,
a pressure of 200 kPa is needed to lift the piston. At the initial state, the cylinder contains
water at 400 kPa and 150°C in a volume of 0.2 m3. The valve is opened until the pressure in
the cylinder reaches that of the supply line, and then the valve is closed. Calculate the
amount of heat transferred in the process if the system equilibrates with a final
temperature of 270°C.
