This workbook is designed to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and


understanding of the learning outcomes listed above, which is part of the Technical
Certificate.

A Technical certificate is a key element of an apprenticeship framework and provides


evidence of your knowledge and understanding of you work.

You should think about what you do, or have done in your job role on a regular
basis, using real life examples.

You should also think about your organisations policies and procedures and how you
implement these whilst at work.

Question 1

Hint: Describe how your company is structured.

For example: managing Director-Operations Director-Finance Director – Engineering


Director. = Senior management.

General Manager - Operations manager - engineering manager and so on.

Inspectors – supervisors – output drivers – union officers.

When the new route is agreed register the route with the Traffic Commissioner and
Local Authority.

Hint: Risk assess the route – is it suitable for a bus. Type of bus, road conditions,

What are the procedures for the carriage of passengers?

Hint: Think about the following:

 company procedures
 maximum standing and seating capacity
 make scheduled stops and waits
 keep to running schedules
 passenger comfort and safety
 use of seatbelts for carriage of school children or where fitted
 provide details of (communication) disruptions and delays to passengers;
pre-service checks; requirements for carriage of passengers

If you have been involved in a collision or accident think about what you did; what
procedures did you follow?

Hint: Legal requirements e.g. stop immediately after collision or incident has
happened; company procedures (ensure safety of passengers, switch off engine,
secure vehicle, request emergency services); company reporting and recording
procedure. Report to police. Accident/incident report forms.

Write how on-board equipment assists in the running of the service or helps with
customer comfort.

Hint: Priority passenger (equipment-ramp, lowering floor, wheelchair base), health


and safety equipment (first aid, fire extinguisher, hammers), comfort equipment and
facilities (heating, phone chargers, Wi-Fi, information displays), satellite navigation

operation?

Hint: PA systems, electronic display boards, bells, depot communication systems.

Explain the role of security systems in bus or coach operations.

Hint: CCTV, fire alarms, door alarms, anti-theft alarms, engine stop button, driver
safety screen, panic button, radio, authorised entry to staff area, set pattern to start
the bus.
