Charging for Civil Engineering Services
As future Civil Engineer how you Update the Charges in Civil Engineering
referring to:
• Minimum compensation for CE as prime professional
The minimum compensation for civil engineer as a prime professional was divided
into three categories. Group 1 is for simple structures such as one storey buildings,
warehouses, market buildings and comparable projects. If I were to update this
charge, I will keep it as it is. The value of the minimum basic fees for me are fair.
However, some issues or problems might arise for project construction cost of over
20 to 30 Million and Over 30 Million. Because the excess amount may be
compromised or some might commit to fraud just to get a high compensation.
Same goes with Group 2 for building of 3 to 14 floors, towers, tanks, industrial
buildings, piers, and comparable projects. For this group, I will increase the
minimum basic fees especially for project construction cost of over P10 Million to
P20 Million. Because the quality of work and materials may be compromised just
to obtain a high value of excess to have the 6.5% excess. The solution that I can
think of is to lower the percentage of construction cost and provide a just and
satisfactory minimum compensation in order to save the quality and efficiency of
the project. For Group 3 that are assigned to build buildings of 15 or more floors,
long span and complex bridges, high dams, port works, and power plants. For me
the professional fee are just but depending on the complexity and hardship of
the project, this fee must be changed upon agreement or negotiation of the
prime professional engineer and the client. In addition, I would also like to
increase the percentage of the civil engineer who is not the prime professional
but renders basic civil engineering service to 30% because I believe that they are
the one who do the job instructed by the prime professional engineer.
• Minimum compensation for CE as prime professional not prime
In relation to the aforementioned statement, I would like to increase the minimum
engineer’s fee for this sector. Since Group 4 are assigned to projects such as
hotels, large apartment buildings, shopping centers, resorts, hospitals, and
comparable projects that are for usage of high volume of population. I believe
that engineers that work in this group are pressured since many lives are at their
stake which brings them to design and construct the project with utmost care,
attention, and skill. Therefore, I would increase the minimum engineer’s fee and
also the percentage of excess for this sector. But that always depend on the
quality and workmanship that the professional will exert. Such as how long the
project will be constructed or how complicated will it be to design for maximum
safety.
• Minimum compensation for CE for rendering the f (value engineering,
expert witness and academic services) Services
A fresh graduate of this course may earn an above the minimum wage or
higher, depending on the company he/she has worked for. However, base on
the minimum compensation for civil engineers who render the following
service in the given material shows the various pay depending on the given
job.
For Value engineering they are those who solve problems, identify and
eliminate unwanted costs and improve function and quality. For me the 25
percentage of professional fee plus an incentive of 25 percent of the total
savings may be justifiable. However, I will update it to 40 percent in the
professional fee because this type of job is hard since it recognizes and applies
work to achieve an efficient project to optimize initial and long-term
investment with the goal to have the best possible value for the project at
lowest cost.
Civil engineers who serve as expert witnesses are licensed engineers and they
usually have over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Civil
engineering expert witness are skilled and knowledgeable in the design,
construction and maintenance of the man-made constructions. These
engineering experts can assist attorneys with cases involving the following:
construction delay, construction defects, construction safety and other
related issues. For me the minimum compensation is justifiable to have a 2000
php in pay per appearance. But that depends on how long the expert witness
will stay and the reports he/she will do.
For academic Services, I will update the category for the BS degree holder,
Master degree holder, and doctorate degree holder and increase the
minimum compensation per hour. Serving in the academe is hard and I
believe they also need to get a good compensation so that professors will not
be demotivated by their salaries. These civil engineers who serve the
academe shall also have great recognition because they are the ones who
can produce quality engineers in the future for nation building.
