Hydrologic Cycle
the sequence of conditions through which water vapor in the atmosphere turns to
precipitation and then back to water vapor in the atmosphere
Evaporation
A change from liquid to vapor form
Transpiration
the process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water
vapor through pores in their leaves
Condensation
the act or process of reducing a gas or vapor to a liquid or solid form
Precipitation
the act of a substance falling to the ground as snow, sleet, rain, or hail
Collection
the process by which water gathers back into bodies of water such as rivers, lakes
and oceans via precipitation
Infiltration
the process by which precipitation or water soaks into soil and moves into rocks
through cracks and pore spaces
Surface Runoff
water from rain, snowmelt, or other sources that flows over the land surface
Aquifer
a body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater
Sun
a large star that provides radiant energy to Earth
Pore
a small opening in an organism through which gases, liquids, or microscopic
particles can pass through
Water Table
the surface that separates unsaturated and saturated soil and rocks
Watershed
an area of land that separates waters flowing into different rivers, basins, or seas
Iceberg
a large mass of floating ice broken off of a glacier or ice sheet carried out to sea
Glacier
a slow moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of
snow on mountains or in the poles
Lake
a large body of water surrounded completely by land
Well
a pit or hole sunk into the earth to reach a supply of water
