HYDROLOGIC
CYCLE

THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

It also known as the water cycle.

It is a way of describing the material flow of water throughout the Earth.

It involves natural phenomena that include precipitation such as rain and

snow, drainage from rivers and the return of water to the atmosphere
through evaporation and transpiration.

THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

Evaporation
It is the change of state in a substance from a liquid to a gas.
It refers to the physical process in which water from the land and water on the
surface of the earth is converted to vapor form.

Transpiration
It refers to the process in which water from the soil is absorbed by the plants
(roots) and discharged back to the atmosphere through the leaves (through
little pores present in the leaves which are known as stomata).
THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

Condensation
It is the process whereby water vapor in the atmosphere is changed into a
liquid state. In the atmosphere condensation may appear as clouds or dew.

Precipitation
It refers to the forms of water that fall from the atmosphere to the surface of
the earth such as rain, drizzle or snow.
THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

Surface Runoff
It refers to all the overland flow as well as the precipitation that flows to a
stream or river channel.

Infiltration
It refers to the movement of water from the ground surface to the underlying
soil layers.

Percolation
It refers to the movement of the subsurface water to the water table.
