Hydrologic
Cycle
WHAT IS HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
❖ The hydrologic cycle is the system which describes and movement of water between the earth and its atmosphere .
❖ Hydrologic cycle describes how water is exchange through earths land, ocean and atmosphere.
❖ It also describes the continuous movement of all forms of water [vapor, liquid and solid] on, in and above earth
surface.
MAJOR PROCESS OF HYDROLOGIC CYCLE

❑EVAPORATION

❑TRANSPIRATION

❑CONDENSATION

❑PRECIPITATION

❑INFILTRATION & RUNOFF

➢ EVAPORATION
Evaporation occurs when water changes from liquid state to gaseous state. It occurs on water surface like lakes, seas etc.
Evaporated moisture is lifted into atmosphere. But some vapor always exists in the atmosphere.
➢ TRANSPIRATION
Transpiration is the biological process that occurs mostly in a day. Water inside plants is transferred to the atmosphere as
water vapor. Only a small portion of water is retained by the plants.
➢ CONDENSATION
Condensation is the process by which water vapor changes into water. Water vapor condenses to from dew, fog, or clouds.
Condensation takes place due to cooling of air.
➢ PRECIPITATION
Precipitation is the process that occurs when water particles fall from the atmosphere and reach the ground. Precipitated
water may fail into water bodies or on land. It can then go to streams or penetrate into the soil.
➢ INFILTRATION
Infiltration is the physical process involving movement of water through the boundary area where atmosphere
interfaces with the soil.
➢ RUNOFF
Runoff is a flow from a drainage basin in surface streams.
CONCLUSION

Conclusively, Hydrologic cycle involves the circulation of water between the earth and its atmosphere.
Water is constantly moving from one place to another through the processes of evaporation, transpiration,
Condensation, precipitation, infiltration and runoff. Hence, sun is the main component which makes the
Hydrologic cycle to function.
