Part 1

This episode (592) was
quite spontaneous. I didn’t
plan in advance which
words and phrases I would

use and I just had a basic
outline of things I’d say
while talking. As a result,
loads of natural language
came out of my mouth
which I think is worth
repeating, clarifying and
demonstrating again. It’s all
going to be in the test and
in the pronunciation drills
too.

Some of the language I’m
covering here in this
episode didn’t come up in
episode 592, but I’ve added
it here because I’m using
episode 592 as a jumping
off point. So this means I’m
expanding things here to
cover language and
vocabulary that is related to
what came up originally in
the episode.

lot of language that you use
when talking about starting
things like projects or
maybe meetings, motivating
yourself and others and just
lots of other nice
expressions that you should
know and use.

We’re going to start by
looking at a bunch of
different expressions using
the verb get and there will
be several tangents one
about prepositions and
another about the difference
between get and put .

I used a lot of expressions
with get especially in the
first 10 minutes of the
episode. There are loads of
expressions with GET in
English. I can’t cover them
all here, but you might
remember that I did an
episode of LEP about get
once. It’s episode 466 and
it’s full of explanations
about how we use the word
get in English and there are

loads of examples and all
that good stuff that you
need.

For now, let’s go through
some expressions with get
that I used in this recent
podcast episode.

And we’re going to
immediately take a tangent
into prepositions actually,

because the first expression
is:

Let’s get this show on the
road.

And, if we break this
expression down, we see a
typical pattern in English,
which is this:

Get + preposition

More specifically To get +
something + preposition +
something

This means to move
something to a certain place
or into a certain position.

In the case of “Let’s get this
show on the road” it is a
common expression which
really just means “Let’s
start”, so you could say it’s

an idiom. But taken literally
the expression suggests
that you have a show (like a
theatre show, with props, a
stage, actors, lights) and
you’re suggesting that you
literally put the show on the
road in order to then start
travelling to different places,
performing your show to
audiences. That’s the literal
meaning, but the idiom just
means to start something.

Get + something +
preposition + somewhere

The preposition you use will
be a preposition of place or
movement.

That structure comes up
many times in loads of
expressions with get.

Those are just examples
with in, into, off but there
are a lot of other

prepositions too, as we’ll
see in a moment.

This type of English is
extremely common and
natural, but also surprisingly
difficult for learners of
English to use comfortably.

So, it’s get + preposition
basically, more specifically
get + something +

You might be thinking, “Are
these phrasal verbs?” Some
would say “yes”, but you
could also argue that
they’re not really phrasal
verbs because get pretty
much means the same
thing in each case and the
preposition is just adding a
position or movement to
that. But, what’s in a name?
They’re verbs, they’re

phrases, call them phrasal
verbs if you like.

So, this is where we take
our tangent away from
these expressions with get
and have a look at
prepositions of position or
movement, and also
consider the difference
between get and put .

Tangent 1: Prepositions of
position or movement

By prepositions I’m talking
about those little words that
are often used to add nouns
into sentences, on, in,
through, between, around
etc.

To be fair, ‘prepositions of
position or movement’ is

stuff that most people learn
near the beginning of their
studies, but let’s have a
quick look at it here
because it can help bring
some clarity and can help
you understand how some
phrases and phrasal verbs
work.

Generally, these
prepositions refer to
positions (where things are)

or movement (the direction
in which they move).

Prepositions don’t always
refer to position or
movement, but they often
do. These ones do.

They go with be (The
money is in the safe) but
also with get ( I want you to
get the money out o f the
safe, now) and some other

verbs like put (Get the
money out of the safe and
put it in this bag, or I will put
a bullet in you. You mean
you’ll shoot me ? That is
another way of putting it,
yes. Now, pretty please,
with a cherry on top, put the
money in the bag.)

Prepositions don’t always
refer to position or
movement

One mistake that learners
of English make is that they
assume that prepositions
have one meaning and they
always have that meaning
in every bit of usage.

Learners might ask me
“Luke, what does at mean,
exactly?” because they
want to be able to
understand when exactly

they should always use at
or just how to choose the
right preposition every time.

The thing is, prepositions
don’t just have one meaning
which is applied in every
case. The fact is, you often
have to just learn that
certain prepositions go with
other words. They just stick
to other adjectives, verbs
and nouns.

I can break it down like this
prepositions have easy
meanings and difficult
meanings.

By easy meanings I really
mean the expressions of
position or movement.
When prepositions refer to
position or movement, their
meaning is pretty fixed and
consistent.

You know, all those images
that you might have studied,
perhaps involving a ball and
some boxes. Those show
the meaning of prepositions
in terms of position or
movement.
In the box, next to the box,
behind the box, between
the boxes, go into the box,
come out of the box.

Those prepositions there
are referring to position and
movement, and that’s quite
clear.

But the difficult meanings
are when prepositions are
used in expressions in a
seemingly random way and
in a way that doesn’t seem
to be consistent with their
“easy” position or
movement meanings.

I mean, they’re used in
idiomatic expressions or
they’re used in collocations
with other words where a
sense of position or
movement isn’t being
expressed.

For example, in the
expression “ to give up
smoking ” it means to quit
or stop. I can’t think of a

reason why we’re using up
in that expression. How
does moving something
from a low position to a high
position relate to stopping
or quitting? Another
example would be “I’m
looking forward to seeing
you soon” the preposition
here (to) also isn’t used to
express a physical position.
In fact the preposition
doesn’t really mean

anything on its own it’s just
there to add an object to the
phrase look forward . It
could feasibly be “ Look
forward for seeing you
soon ”, but it just isn’t. The
right preposition in that
phrase is “to”, and that’s just
the way it is.

It is totally normal for
learners to try to understand
the real, essential, original,

true meaning of each
preposition in order to know
how you should always use
it and to decode all our
phrasal verbs, collocations
and multiword expressions,
but you should remember
that prepositions are often
used in ways which are
totally inconsistent and
unrelated to their “easy”
meaning as markers of
position or movement.

Does this make sense?
Basically, what I’m saying is
that prepositions are tricky
and they don’t always have
one universal meaning.
Sometimes you will have to
just remember that certain
prepositions go with certain
verbs, nouns or adjectives
and in certain multiword
expressions and you have
to remember those

collocations and
expressions as whole units,
rather than just learning
each individual word
separately.

Right now though we’re
looking at the phrase get +
somewhere and in this
particular case the good
news is that the
prepositions are being used

to express position or
movement. So in these
expressions, generally,
we’re looking at the easy
meanings of prepositions.

Those examples again
Come on, help me get the
kids in the car . (move the
kids into the car)
I bet you can’t get this
paper ball into that bin
from here. (throw or move

Tangent 2: What’s the
difference between get
and put ?

This is a question that any
reasonable person might
ask when considering these
two examples.
Put the money in the bag.
Get the money in the bag.
What is the difference
between get and put here?

My wife often gets these
words wrong. Instead of
saying “Put the cheese in
the fridge”, she’ll say “Get
the cheese in the fridge”,
which doesn’t sound right.
There is a difference.

Put just means to place an
object in a particular
position, for example “Put
the money in the bag”, “Put

the gun down” “Put your
hands where I can see
them”, “Don’t forget to put
the cheese back in the
fridge darling.”

Get is a complex verb
because it has so many
uses and meanings and
appears in a wide variety of
expressions. Here I just
want to look at how “ Get the
money in the bag ” is

different to “ Put the money
in the bag ”. This
explanation does not
explain how get and put are
different in every situation
(for example, you can say
“get drunk” but you wouldn’t
say “put drunk”) so this is
just in reference to the
difference between get and
put in expressions like get +
something + in/on/off etc”

we know just means you
want the person to place
the money in the bag.
Simple.
Saying “G et the money in
the bag ” suggests there is
some sort of challenge or
difficulty involved, for
example you might say

money in that bag. I bet you
can’t.

That’s why it sounds
strange to say Get the
cheese in the fridge
because it’s not that much
of a challenge, is it. We’ve
got to get this cheese in that
fridge! We’ve got 24 hours!

But then again, we do say
“Get the cheese out of the
fridge”, but this is just
because get can also mean
obtain . Oh my word, English
can appear to be so
inconsistent.

In the case of put and get
maybe it’s just more simple

somewhere, but you can
get something from or out of
somewhere.

Put the cheese in the fridge.
Get the cheese from the
fridge.
Put your jeans in the
cupboard. Get your jeans
out of the cupboard.

OK, so that’s get and put ,
but let’s go back to what I
was saying about how
prepositions go with get to
make all these expressions

I’m about to go through a
list with loads of different
prepositions. The point of
this is to consider different
prepositions, either to
describe place or
movement, and then put

them into the expression
get + something +

Some prepositions aren’t
included here because they
don’t go into this structure
with get as far as I’m aware.

Also, you are bound to think
about other expressions
with get and these
prepositions, particularly

idiomatic phrasal verbs like
“to get away with it” or “to
get through to someone”
but I’m only looking at this
one particular structure at
the moment.

But now here’s a list of

all referred to positions or
movement.

also work if you don’t
include the object, but then
they refer to you. That’s
probably not clear. Let me
explain quickly.

You can say “I want to get
the bags into the car” the

kind of border, maybe just a
2D border (like in the

the tent, inside the house )
Into = usually describes a
movement go into the

On, onto

eans touching a
surface or at a certain point
on a line. E.g. Don’t put

We use around and round
when we refer to

American English. Round
is a little more common in

Under means that it is
positioned with something
over it, often obscuring it.

They’re quite similar, but
below just means in a lower
position, under means that

Under the blanket the

covering it.

something else (in terms of

Sometimes the two words

To emphasise that
