WHAT IS CAD?
CAD (Computer Aided Design) is the use of
computer software to design and document a
product’s design process.

CAD is used to accomplish preliminary design

and layouts, design details and calculations,
creating 3-D models, creating and releasing
drawings, as well as interfacing with analysis,
marketing, manufacturing, and end-user
personnel.

The use of CAD software tools allow the object

to be viewed from any angle, even from the
inside looking out.

WHAT IS CAD?
A few advantages of CAD include: Since its introduction in late 1960’s,
❑ Increased productivity CAD software has improved by leaps
❑ Improved precision and bounds. A broad classification of
❑ 3D modeling CAD is:
❑ Better visualization ❑ 2D CAD
❑ Faster editing process ❑ 3D CAD
❑ Faster collaboration ❑ Solid Modeling
❑ 3D Wireframe
❑ Surface Modeling
2D CAD
2D drafting and drawing is the process of 2D CAD software offers a platform to design
creating and editing technical drawings, in two dimensions. Since 2D CAD does not
allow for the creation of perspectives or scale,
as well as annotating designs.
it is often used for drawing, sketching and
drafting conceptual designs.

2D CAD is often used for floor plan

development, building permit drawing
building inspection planning, and
landscaping layouts. Since it is mainly used
as a tool for conceptual design, it is also a
great starting point for most 3D designs. This
gives users a basic overview of dimension and
scale before they move on to 3D design.

3D CAD
3D CAD, or three-dimensional computer-
aided design, is technology for design
and technical documentation, which
replaces manual drafting with an
automated process.

The main feature of this type of CAD

software is 3D solid modeling. This lets
designers create objects with length,
width and height, allowing more accurate
scaling and visualization. With this
feature, users can push and pull surfaces Once the 3D design is finished, it can be
and manipulate designs to adjust transferred to a 3D rendering software and
measurements. placed in fully realized 3D landscapes.
SOLID MODELING
Solid Modeling is the computer modeling
of 3D solid objects. The objective of Solid
Modeling is to ensure that every surface
is geometrically correct.

It is considered the most complex

aspect to master in computer-aided
design (CAD) because it requires the
CAD software to simulate the object from
within and outside. This is critical as it lets
designers provide cutaways of the
design, such as an engine and its
components.

3D WIREFRAME
The term is derived from designers using
metal wire to represent the three-
dimensional shape.

3D wire frame model is the most

abstract out of the three 3D CAD
models, the other two models being
surface and solid.

A 3D wireframe model is an edge or

skeletal representation of a real-world
object. Geometrically, it consists of points,
lines, arcs, circle, and other curves that
define the edges or center lines.
SURFACE MODELING
Surface Modeling is the method of This also means, however, that surface
showing or presenting solid objects. The models cannot be sliced open like their
process requires converting between
solid counterparts, because the object is
different 3D modeling types, validate
imperfections, and apply smoothness. essentially hollow.
While more complex than Wireframe
Modeling, Surface Modeling is easier to
achieve than Solid Modeling.

Unlike solid modeling, your object can be

geometrically and physically incorrect -
with no properties of mass defined and no
thickness. This gives the designer the
unique ability to modify the model in ways
that solid models are incapable.

WHAT IS PAPER SPACE?
Paper space represents a paper layout of your
drawing. In this work area, you can create and
arrange different views of your drawing, similar
to the way you arrange drawings on a sheet of
paper.

In paper space you can also add keynotes,

annotations, borders, title blocks, and other
print-related entities, which you don't want to
see in model space.

AR. CARL JONNEL ELIPANE, UAP , 24/10/2020, 11:01:25 PM

AR. CARL JONNEL ELIPANE, UAP , 24/10/2020, 11:01:25 PM

WHAT IS PAPER SPACE?

Each drawing has at least one Layout in which you can have one or more
Layout Viewports. Such layout viewports are to be considered as a view window
on your drawing in model space.

Layout viewports can be placed anywhere in a paper space layout. Each

viewport has its own scale and layer visibility. All viewports in the same layout
can be printed simultaneously.
ADVANTAGES OF PAPER SPACE
❑ Create multiple layouts to print the same drawing with different print settings,
such as pen widths, printer configuration files, line weight settings, drawing
scale, and more.

❑ Add print-related entities that are not essential to the model itself, such as
keynotes, annotations, title blocks, etc.

❑ For a single layout, create multiple layout viewports to print multiple views of
your drawing at different scales.

PAPER SPACE vs MODEL SPACE

To simply understand: By default, you start working in a limitless 3D drawing area
called model space. When you are preparing the drawing for printing, you will
switch to paper space. Model space is accessible from the Model tab and paper
space is accessible from the layout tabs.
USING THE MODEL & LAYOUT TABS
1. To open model space, click the Model tab (2) at the bottom of the drawing window.
2. To open a paper space layout, click the corresponding Layout tab (3) at the bottom
of the drawing window.
3. Use Ctrl-PgUp or Ctrl-PgDn to switch to the previous or next layout tab.
4. Click the navigation buttons to shift the tab display (1):
❑ Display the model tab.
❑ Shift one tab to the left.
❑ Shift one tab to the right.
❑ Shift to the last tab.

set the format for units of measure. For
2. Hit ENTER
example, if you choose Engineering and
Architectural formats, AutoCAD will assume
that each unit represents one inch.

The INSERTION SCALE controls the unit of

measurement for blocks that are inserted into
your drawing. It is recommended to select
Unitless to be able to insert blocks without
scaling them to match the specified units.
