a. During the past 10 years, a tree has produced plums every other year. Last year
the tree did not produce plums, so this year the tree will produce plums.
Answer: Inductive reasoning
b. All home improvements cost more than the estimate. The contractor estimated
that my home improvement will cost P1, 500, 000. Thus my home improvement
will cost more than P1, 500, 000.
Answer: Deductive reasoning

Use the data in the table and inductive reasoning to answer each of the following
questions:
a. If a pendulum has a length of 49 units, what is its period?
Solution:
12 = 1, 22 = 4, 32 = 9, 42 = 16, 52 = 25, 62 = 36, 72 = 49
Ÿ each of the pendulum in the table has a duration that is the square root of its
length. The conjecture that a pendulum with a length of 49 units would have a
period of 7 heart beats.

b. If the length of the pendulum is quadrupled, what happens to its period?


ŸIt seems that a quadrupling of the length of the pendulum it doubles its period.

A tsunami is a sea wave produced by an underwater earthquake. The height of a
tsunami as it approaches land depends on the velocity of the tsunami. Use the
table and inductive reasoning to answer the following:

a. What happens to the height of a tsunami when it its velocity is doubled?
Solution:
V1 = 6ft/sec; H1 = 4ft
2x6 = 12ft/sec; H2 = 16ft = 4 x 4ft
ŸIts velocity doubles is four times than the initial height.

a. What should be the height of a tsunami if its velocity is 30 feet per second?
Solution:
Velocity:
6 + 3 = 9, 9 + 3 = 12, 12 + 3 = 15, 15 + 3 = 18, 18 + 3 = 21, 21 + 3 = 24, 24 + 3 =
27, 27 + 3 = 30
Height:
4 + 5 = 9, 9 + 7 = 16, 16 + 9 = 25, 25 + 11 = 36, 36 + 13 = 49, 49 + 15 = 64, 64 +
17 = 81, 81 + 19 = 100

ŸThe height of 30 feet per second velocity is equivalent to 100 feet.
