The dispute is about the war in Afghanistan against Taliban fighters. b. What led to the dispute? Since the early 1990s, the Taliban are former Afghan resistance fighters, also known as mujahedeen. They once defended the invasion of Soviet forces in the 1980s with the help of Osama Bin Laden and other influential people that strengthened their armed forces. After successfully fighting against the Soviet Union, they want to remove foreign influences and impose their interpretation of Islamic law on the country. They started hitting foreign forces within the country and other Islamic regions. However, this includes the heavy restriction on women who are restricted to receive education and overall freedom, which made a resistance within their community. This changed when their men hijacked four commercial planes in the US that led to crushing into the World Trade Center towers. More than 2,700 people were killed from the attacks, which prompted the US to fight against the Taliban. The US could secure capital by placing aircraft and an army for support to fight against the Taliban. After the Taliban flees away from the capital, they wanted to have peace with the people of Afghanistan inside the capital that the US protects, but their current president ignored it. They signed a peace deal in 2020, but they started once again to take over Afghanistan in early August, and on August 15, 2021, they entered and took control of the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul. c. What the government officials from the disputing countries are doing to address the problem. The government officials were not directly involved, but through religion, they could obtain support from the prince of Saudi Arabia. It was later addressed by fighting against the Soviet Union. However, after removing foreign countries within their regions in the name of their religion, they attacked some US bases. Those opposed to the Taliban had aid from the US for human resources and modern equipment that led to their freedom for decades from 2001 until early 2021. However, once the US troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan, the Taliban started to take control of the country, leading the president of Afghanistan to leave the country without announcement when it was once again attacked. d. How the concept and sense of nationalism are observed in the different measures to address the dispute. A strong sense of nationalism was shown when Afghanistan fought against the Soviet Union. However, nationalism was not felt when the president of Afghanistan left his home country for his protection and for the pretense of avoiding “a flood of bloodshed” against the forces of the Taliban.
