Windows Commands and Troubleshooting

Windows 7 SP1 Extended Support End Date – 14-Jan 2020

Windows 8.1 Extended Support End Date – 10-Jan 2023

Windows 10 Builds – 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703 – No longer Supported

Build 1709 – Support end date – 09-April 2019

Run Commands –
 netplwiz – to create user account or to change settings of current account
 sysdm.cpl – To create a Restore Point
 rstrui.exe – To open already created restore points
 msinfo32 – To view basic system info and to check model number of device
 Control System – To check if system is connected to domain, To check Windows
Edition and to check activation status.
 Winver – To check Windows edition, version and build number
 Services.msc – To open various services, usually used in Update troubleshooting
 Msconfig – To perform clean boot or to boot into safe mode.
 Taskmgr – To open task manager
 Wsreset – To Reset Windows Store
 Inetcpl.cpl – To open Internet Explorer Settings
 Ncpa.cpl – To open Network Settings
 SLUI 3 – online activation
 SLUI 4 – Offline Activation / Phone Activation
 Winword – To open MS Word
 Winword /safe – Word in safe mode
 Win Key + E – To open explorer
 Win Key + Pause/Beak Key – To open Computer information page
 Devmgmt.msc – To open Device Manager
 Cleanmgr.exe – To open disk clean up
 Diskmgmt.msc – To open disk manager
 Mrt – Malicious Removal Tool – To remove any malicious software installed on
Windows

CMD Commands-
 To activate Hidden Admin Account – net user administrator /active:yes
 To Hide Hidden Admin Account – net user administrator /active:no
 To perform sfc Scan – sfc /scannow
 To perform Internet Troubleshooting –
o ipconfig /release
o ipconfig /renew
o ipconfig /flushdns
o netsh winsock reset
 DISM command –

o dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
o dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
 WMIC Command – wmic path softwarelicensingservice get oa3xoriginalproductkey

Troubleshooting-
1. Activation of Windows 7-
a. Windows got deactivated suddenly –
i. Ask for COA
ii. Check product key on KIT
iii. Perform online activation by SLUI 3 -if it fails
iv. Perform slmgr commands-
1. Slmgr.vbs /upk
2. Slmgr.vbs /cpky
3. Slmgr.vbs /rearm – only if computer is in RFM
4. Slmgr.vbs /rilc
5. Slmgr.vbs /ipk “PK”
6. Slmgr.vbs /ato
7. If it fails
v. Perform Offline activation by SLUI 4.
2. Activation of Windows 8/8.1 –
a. Windows got deactivated suddenly-
i. Use wmic command to fetch out product key
ii. Check it on KIT and match it with OS installed – Edition of Key and
Installed Windows should be same.
iii. Use SLUI 3 – If it fails
iv. Use slmgr commands – if it fails
v. Use SLUI 4
b. Windows got deactivated after changing the Motherboard –
i. Ask for the PK from customer.
ii. If he doesn’t have the key – Ask to locate COA or contact
Manufacturer
iii. If he has the product key then –
1. Slmgr.vbs /upk
2. Slmhr.vbs /ipk “pk”
3. SLUI 4
3. Activation of Windows 10-
a. Windows got deactivated suddenly-
i. Use WMIC command
ii. Check the key on KIT
iii. Use SLUI 3 – if it fails
iv. Use slmgr commads – if it fails
v. Use SLUI 4
b. Windows got deactivated after Mother Board Replacement and was
upgraded from Windows 7/8/8.1–

i. Ask the customer for the Product key
ii. If he doesn’t have one, ask him to look for COA
iii. If COA is also not there, ask him to get the key from Manufacturer and
call us back again.
iv. If he finds the key, process MBR with the help of Supervisor.
c. Windows got deactivated after Mother Board change and computer came
with Windows 10 Pre-installed –
i. Use magic Jelly Bean to fetch out the product key
ii. Check it on KIT to match the edition of key and Windows Isntalled
iii. Use –
1. slmgr.vbs /upk
2. slmgr.vbs /ipk
3. SLUI 4
d. Windows got deactivated after Mother Board change and customer has a
Windows 10 Product key –
i. Use SLUI 4 for override
e. If customer calls to know the status of his product key or directly comes with
an Installation ID – Transfer call to PA.
f. Activation using Digital License Linked to MSA – Go to Settings > Update And
Security > Activation > Troubleshoot > Choose I changed my hardware > Sign
in with MSA. Activation Successful. Note – It will only work if Mother Board
has not been changed.
Windows 7 Download and Install –
1. Ask the customer for Product key.
2. If product key is not available ask the customer about COA.
3. Check the key on KIT
4. If Retail key – Ask customer to download ISO from Microsoft Website.
5. Download Windows 7 USB/DVD tool to make a bootable drive using that ISO
6. If OEM Key – Redirect to OEM to get Installation media of Windows 7.
7. Ask customer to plug in the flash drive.
8. Turn the device On and continuously tap Boot manager key, as soon as the device
boots. Check the boot manager key of that device using Bing.
9. Choose flash drive from the options
10. Choose language and region and click next
11. Choose the drive and click delete until you see “Unallocated Space” written in
description.
12. Choose that Unallocated space and click on Install.
13. If it asks for the Key, enter the key.
Windows 8/8.1
1. Ask for the key, if not available, use WMIC to fetch out, if mother board has not been
changed
2. Download ISO image from Microsoft’s Website.

3. Download Windows 7 USB/DVD tool to make a bootable drive using that Image file.
4. Rest of the steps are same as above
Windows 10
1. Ask for the key and check it on KIT
2. Download Media Creation tool form Microsoft’s website.
3. Make a bootable drive.
4. Repeat above mentioned steps.
Internet Troubleshooting -
1. Wifi not working –
a. Connect the computer via Ethernet cable > Take LMI > Update WIF Driver
form Manufacturer’s Website.
b. If ethernet cable is also not working.
c. Use run command – NCPA.CPL to open network properties and uncheck IPv6
port. – If it fails
d. Then Reset Windows Socket by opening command prompt with admin rights
and using below mentioned command – netsh winsock reset and restart.
e. If it fails, then reset ip configuration by following commands in cmd –
i. Ipconfig /release
ii. Ipconfig /renew
iii. Ipconfig /flushdns
iv. Then change the DNS and alternate DNS with 4.0.0.0 and 4.0.0.1
Printer Troubleshooting-
 First open any document and check if correct printer is selected or not by using
ctrl+P in that document.
 Then check the printer name from Settings > Devices > Printers and Scanners and
note that name down.
 Now remove the printer/scanner from there.
 Go to support website of Printer/scanner – support.”manufacturer”.com
 Search for that Printer model number.
 Check the drivers – If the drivers are available for Installed OS then download the
driver and Install them.
 If Driver not available for Windows OS, educate the cx that his Printer/Scanner is no
longer compatible.
Start Menu/Task Bar Not Working
 Use netplwiz and create new user account giving it Admin rights.
 Log in to the new user and check if start menu is working there.
 IF it is working there then transfer all the data to new user account.
 If it is not working, go back to original user.
 Open CMD with admin rights
 Activate hidden admin user account

 Check the start menu there.
 If it is not working there as well. Run Media creation tool and download the ISO on
desktop and Install Windows again.
Store Application Not Working-
 Use wsreset in run box to reset Windows Store
 Sign in using the MSA from which the app was purchased.
 If it fails, then create new user account with admin rights, open store, sign in with
MSA and try to download.
Scam Pop UP
 Remove Pop up using Task manager and ending the Internet explorer task or Chrome
task or Edge task depending upon the web browser.
 Cleaning browsing history by taking permission from the customer.
 Cleaning cookies
 And then suggest support.microsoft.com/reportascam.
Low Disk Space
 Open disk cleanup using cleanmgr.exe command and delete temporary and junk
files.
Remove Malicious Software
 Use run command “mrt” to open malicious software removal tool and choose full
scan to scan complete system of any malicious software.
Unable To sign in Even after Entering the correct password
 Ask the cx to enter password using On-Screen Keyboard
 If it fails, Ask the cx to try System Restore – It’ll again ask for the same password
after selecting the user account – If it fails
 Use WinRE by holding the shift key down and restart.
 Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Start Up Settings
 If Start Up settings is not there then choose “See more recovery options and then
choose Start Up Settings.
 Click on Restart.
 Once the computer restarts various safe mode options show up, choose 5 th option
which is Safe mode with networking by pressing F5.
 Computer will boot into safe mode.
 Ask the customer to enter password in safe mode.
 After entering in safe mode, create a new user account with admin rights.
 Boot into that account and transfer all data to that user account.
Blue Screen/Black Screen Error-
 Go to WinRE by hard boot or crash boot.
 First try start up repair under advanced options. – if it fails

 Try system restore – If it fails
 Try Safe mode – if it fails
 Try Reset – While keeping Files – If it fails
 Try reset by choosing remove everything – Give disclaimer to the customer that all
his Data will be deleted.
