SCABS, FISSURES, GROWTHS AND / OR COLOR
CHANGES.

LOOK AT THE PATIENT AND ASK HIM TO SMILE.

WITH THIS MANEUVER YOU WILL CHECK

bipupillary line is equidistant from the
plane of occlusion of the natural
teeth (smile line).

your gaze to the patient's chin and neck.

zygomatic arches, which shoul be
symmetrical.
INTRAORAL
EXAMINATION
LIP
OBSERVATION
The first step is beginning the
examination by observing the lips with the
patient's mouth closed and open.
Consider color, texture, and surface
abnormalities at the top and bottom
edges.

Examine the right buccal mucosa first,

then the left, extending from the corner
of the mouth to the anterior abutment.
EXAMINATION OF
THE LINGUAL
FACES

Second, examine the lingual faces

as you have done on the buccal,
from right to left on the palate
(maxilla) and from left to right on
the lingual (mandible)

TONGUE
EXAMINATION

The third part of the exam, with the

tongue, inspect the back of the
tongue. Look for swelling, ulceration,
coating, or variation in size, color, and
texture.

Note any changes in the pattern of

the papillae covering the surface of
the tongue and examine the tip of
the tongue. The patient should stick
out the tongue and the examiner
should consider any abnormalities in
mobility or position.
TONGUE
EXAMINATION

Grasping the tip of the tongue with a

piece of gauze will help complete the
bulge and allow examination of the
posterior region of the lateral edges of
the tongue.

Examine the ventral surface. Feel

your tongue to see if it has
consistency.
FLOOR OF THE
MOUTH
EXAMINATION

The fifth step is with the tongue still

elevated, inspect the floor of the
mouth for changes in color, texture,
swelling, or other surface
abnormalities.
HARD AND SOFT
PALATE
EXAMINATION

And finally with the mouth wide open

and the patient's head thrown back,
gently press down on the base of the
tongue with a dental mirror. Inspect
the hard palate first and then the soft
palate, with both hands, feel the floor
of the mouth for abnormalities. All
tissues that appear abnormal should
be palpated.
