Raymond Classifier
Aim: To find out the effectiveness of equipment used for classification process i.e., Raymond Classifier.
Theory:
Raymond classifier performs the classification process based on both characteristics i.e., size and density.
The classification process is different from the separation process by vibrating screen or sieve analysis as
they are completely base on size.
There are various classification processes. Classification by Raymond Classifier is based on the centrifugal
force. The circular motion of air particles is used to create the centrifugal force. The separation process is
base on combination of density and size i.e., mass. The particles with higher mass will revolve in large
diameter and will hit the outer drum and slides down to the central outlet. The particles with lighter mass
will revolve in small diameter and will hit the inner drum and slides down to the side outlet. In this way the
coarser and finer particles get separated.
Raymond classifier is used in the industries where extraction of fine fraction of solid, dry material is desired.
Particles of order of microns are intended to be separated by this classifier.
Effectiveness of Raymond Classifier:
Effectiveness, Ec = (xf – xr) xp 1 – (xf-xr)(1-xp)
(xp – xr) xf (xp-xr)(1-xf)
Xf is weight fraction of desired material in feed.
Xp is weight fraction of desired material in product.
Xr is weight fraction of desired material in reject.
The effectiveness of classifier gives us idea about how well the classifier can classify the particles.
