Raymond Classifier
Aim: To find out the effectiveness of equipment used for classification process i.e., Raymond Classifier.
Theory:
Raymond classifier performs the classification process based on both characteristics i.e., size and density.
The classification process is different from the separation process by vibrating screen or sieve analysis as
they are completely base on size.
There are various classification processes. Classification by Raymond Classifier is based on the centrifugal
force. The circular motion of air particles is used to create the centrifugal force. The separation process is
base on combination of density and size i.e., mass. The particles with higher mass will revolve in large
diameter and will hit the outer drum and slides down to the central outlet. The particles with lighter mass
will revolve in small diameter and will hit the inner drum and slides down to the side outlet. In this way the
coarser and finer particles get separated.
Raymond classifier is used in the industries where extraction of fine fraction of solid, dry material is desired.
Particles of order of microns are intended to be separated by this classifier.
Effectiveness of Raymond Classifier:
Effectiveness, Ec = (xf – xr) xp 1 – (xf-xr)(1-xp)
(xp – xr) xf (xp-xr)(1-xf)
Xf is weight fraction of desired material in feed.
Xp is weight fraction of desired material in product.
Xr is weight fraction of desired material in reject.
The effectiveness of classifier gives us idea about how well the classifier can classify the particles.

Calculations:
Effectiveness, Ec = (xf – xr) xp 1 – (xf-xr)(1-xp) ×100
(xp – xr) xf (xp-xr)(1-xf)

Ec = (0.26-0.0107) 0.47 1 - (0.26-0.0107)(1-0.47) ×100

(0.47-0.0107)0.26 (0.47-0.0107)(1-0.26)
Ec = 59.97%
Results:
The effectiveness of given Raymond classifier is 59.97%.
Discussion:
 Factors affecting the effectiveness of the given classifier:
i) Loss of particles: During the whole process of classification of particles, particles get lost due
to forming dust while feeding, sticking to inside part of machines and get lost while
transferring them from outlets to sieve. Loss of particles affects the weight of final product
and reject which finally affects the effectiveness of the classifier.
ii) Duration of sieving:
 Velocity of air:
The velocity of air provided by draft fan on top is responsible for the cut off diameter. Cut off
diameter is the diameter that makes partition between the coarser and finer particles collected
through central and side outlets. The particles with size greater than the cut off diameter are
collected through central outlet and particles with size smaller than the cut off diameter are
collected through side outlet.
If velocity of air is larger, cut off diameter is larger. If velocity of air is smaller, cut off
diameter is smaller.
