Criterion C: Processing and evaluating – PART 1

1. RESEARCH QUESTION

□ How does the temperature of the solvent affect the solubility?

2. MATERIALS

These materials you should have before you start the experiment:
• 3 beakers
• 3 cups
• 3 spoons
• 3 stirring
• A measuring cup
• Water cooker
• Sugar
• Tap water
• Oven mitt
• Dark colored paper
• Weighing scale
• Thermometer

3. PROCEDURE
Follow the steps of the procedure.
1. Weigh the three cups and write the result here:
• Mass cup 1: ..................................................................................................................
• Mass cup 2: ..................................................................................................................
• Mass cup 3: ..................................................................................................................
2. Fill every cup with 50 g of sugar. Use the weighing scale and a spoon for this.
3. Cook tap water with the water cooker.
4. Fill beaker 1 with 10 ml of cold tap water.

Chemistry Criterion C: Mixtures 1

5. Fill beaker 2 with 5 ml of cold tap water and 5 ml of boiling tap water.
BE CAREFULL, DON’T HOLD THE BEAKER WHILE POURING THE HOT WATER.
AFTERWARDS, USE THE OVEN MITT TO HOLD THE BEAKER.
6. Fill beaker 3 with 10 ml of boiling tap water.
BE CAREFULL, DON’T HOLD THE BEAKER WHILE POURING THE HOT WATER.
AFTERWARDS, USE THE OVEN MITT TO HOLD THE BEAKER.
7. Put the three beakers on the dark colored paper.
8. Measure the temperature of the water in the three beakers and write it down here:
• Temperature beaker 1: ...........................................................................................
• Temperature beaker 2: ...........................................................................................
• Temperature beaker 3: ...........................................................................................
9. Place a cup with sugar in front of every cup.
10. Now add sugar from the cup in front to the beakers with water and stir. It is important
that you always use the same cup of sugar (1-2-3) for the same beaker of water (1-2-3)
and the same stirrer.
11. Stop adding sugar if the solution is saturated (when added sugar doesn’t dissolve
anymore).
12. Weigh the cups with the sugar and register the results here
• Mass cup 1 with sugar left: ......................................................................................
• Mass cup 2 with sugar left: ......................................................................................
• Mass cup with sugar left:........................................................................................
13. Now calculate the amount of sugar you added in every beaker
• Sugar added to beaker 1:

• Sugar added to beaker 2:

• Sugar added to beaker 3:

4. PRESENT DATA : TABLE
Data table must include:
• Appropriate title
• Draw the table with straight lines (use a ruler)
• Add headings with quantity and units.
Don’t include calculations in the table.

Now turn your data into a table.

Chemistry Criterion C: Mixtures 3

5. PRESENT DATA : GRAPH
Data graph must include:
• Same appropriate title
• Draw the two axes with straight lines
• Correct and appropriate scale (use ticks)
• Correct labelling of the axis
o Independent on the horizontal axis, dependent on the vertical axis
o Units within parenthesis, e.g. V(ml)
• Observations plotted correctly
• Draw the best fit through the plotted points
• Legend (if needed)

Now turn your data into a graph.
