MATH 271 SUMMER 2020

ASSIGNMENT 3.

Deadline: Tuesday, August 4 at 11:59PM.

Submit to: Assignment # 3 Dropbox on D2L as a single PDF file.

Instructions: Please upload your assignment as a single PDF file to the Assignment #3 Dropbox in D2L by 11:59
PM on the due date. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. Assignments must be understandable by the marker
(i.e., logically correct, with good notation and clear exposition, as well as legible), and must be done by the students in
their own words. You are encourage to work with your peers during the initial problem solving stages. However, you
must write up your solutions to all problems individually. See Section K of the University of Calgary for more
information on Academic Misconduct.
Answer all questions, but only one question will be marked for credit. Both mathematical correctness and writing
quality will be assessed.
Note: To prove a statement is false, you must write out the negation of the statement and prove that.
Questions:
1. Let P be the statement: “For all sets A, B and C, if A ∪ B ⊆ A ∪ C then B − A ⊆ C.”
(a) Is P true? Prove your answer.
(b) Write out the converse of P. Is the converse of P true? Prove your answer.
(c) Write out the contrapositive of P. Is the contrapositive of P true? Explain.

2.
n+1 n n

(a) Prove that for all integers n and k where n > k ≥ 0, k+1 = k + k+1 .
n
i n+1
P
(b) Let k be a positive integer. Prove by induction on n that k = k+1 for all integers n ≥ k.
i=k
3. An urn contains five white balls numbered from 1 to 5, five red balls numbered from 1 to 5 and five blue balls
numbered from 1 to 5. For each of the following questions, please give your answer first in the form that reflects your
counting process, and then simplify that to a number. You must include the recipes. No other explanation needed.
(a) In how many ways can we choose 4 balls from the urn?
(b) in how many ways can we choose 4 balls from the urn so that there is at least one red ball among the chosen balls?
(c) In how many ways can we choose 4 balls from the urn so that there is at least one red ball and at least one blue
ball among the chosen balls?
(d) In how many ways can we choose 4 balls from the urn so that the numbers on the chosen balls are distinct?
