FUNCTION
Learning Competencies:

✓ represents real – life situations using functions

✓ evaluates a function
✓ performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition of functions

Many of the equations used to describe real – life relationships between two quantities are functions. In many
situations in science, business, and mathematics, a correspondence exists between two sets of objects. The idea of
correspondence plays a central role in the formulation of the concept of function. You have already had experiences
with correspondences in everyday life. For example; to each person there corresponds an age, to each cellular phone
there corresponds a mobile number, to each circle there corresponds an area. Can you cite other examples that describe
real – life relationship between two quantities?

▪ FUNCTION - is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only one value in the range by some rule.
- a function f is a rule that assigns to each element x in the first set of values, exactly one and only one
element, called f(x) or y, in the second set of values. The variable x is called the independent variable,
while f(x) or y, is the dependent variable.

A function can serve as a

simple kind of
mathematical model. In
representing real-life
situations using functions,
we must follow these steps:

Example 1: Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if a meal costs ₱40.00.
Solution:
i. What is asked? – represent the total cost of x meals if each meal costs ₱40.00.
ii. What is given? – cost of each meal = ₱40.00
iii. What operation should be used? – Multiplication
iv. Number sentence: Total cost = cost of each meal x number of meals

Therefore, C(x) = 40x

Example 2: A certain Ornamental Plant Shop in Naga charges ₱500.00 for a yearly membership. The first ornamental
plant is free with the membership, and any plant after that costs ₱150.00 including tax. How much money M does a
shopper spends after buying p plants and paying a yearly membership?
Solution: Since the first ornamental plant is free, you will subtract 1 from the total p plants that the shopper will get and
multiply it to the cost of each plant, the result will just be added to the yearly membership fee, therefore the cost function
is:
M(p) = 500 + 150 (p – 1)

➢ PIECEWISE FUNCTION – a function that is defined on a series of interval; defined by multiple subfunctions,
where each applies to a certain interval of the main function’s domain.

The function given is defined by two equations. One equation gives

the value of f(x) when x is less than or equal to 1, and the other
equation gives the value of f(x) when x is greater than 1.

Example 3: A user is charged ₱300.00

monthly for a particular mobile plan, inclusive of 100 free text messages. Messages in excess of 100 are charged ₱1.00
each. Represent the monthly bill for the mobile plan using the function t(m), where m is the number of messages sent in
a month.
Solution:
i. What is asked? – represent the total monthly bill cost for text messaging using the function t(m)
ii. What is given? – monthly mobile plan cost = ₱300.00; charge in excess of 100 free text = ₱1.00
iii. What operation should be used? – Multiplication, subtraction, and addition
iv. Number sentence:
a. Identify the intervals for which different rules apply
✓ The mobile plan costs ₱300.00 for up to 100 messages
✓ Over 100 messages costs ₱300.00 plus ₱1.00 per excess in 100 messages
b. Write the condition
✓ ₱300.00, if 0 ≤ m ≤ 100; ₱300.00 + 1(m – 100), if m > 100

Therefore, 𝟑𝟎𝟎, 𝒊𝒇 𝟎 ≤ 𝒎 ≤ 𝟏𝟎𝟎

𝒕(𝒎) = {
𝟑𝟎𝟎 + 𝟏(𝒎 − 𝟏𝟎𝟎), 𝒊𝒇 𝒎 > 𝟏𝟎𝟎

1 Encircle the function that represents each situation.

1. A kilogram of carabao mango can be purchased at Nabua Public Market for ₱140.00. Represent the cost of x
kilograms with function f.

140
𝑓(𝑥) = 140 + 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) = 140 − 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) = 140𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑥

2. Jane is a manager in a restaurant. Her monthly salary is ₱12,500. What is her daily salary if she works for n days?

12,500 𝑛
𝑓(𝑛) = 𝑓(𝑛) = 12,500𝑛 𝑓(𝑛) = 𝑛 − 12,500 𝑓(𝑛) =
𝑛 12,500

3. In an amusement park, a bicycle rent costs ₱30 for the first hour or a fraction of an hour and an additional ₱10.00 for
each succeeding hour. Represent the cost for renting bicycle for x hours.

𝑓(𝑥) = 30 + 10𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) = 10(𝑥 − 1) + 30

30 𝑖𝑓 0<𝑥≤1 30 𝑖𝑓 𝑥≤1
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑓(𝑥) = {
30 + 10(𝑥 − 1) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥>1 30 + 10𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥>1

4. A school’s fair committee wants to sell t-shirts for their school fair. They found a supplier that sells it at a price of
₱175.00 per piece but they can sell it in ₱15,000.00 for a bulk order of 100 shirts and ₱125.00 for each excess t-shirt
after that. Use a piecewise function to represent the cost in terms of the number of t-shirts purchased.

175𝑥 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 < 100

175𝑥 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 < 100
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑓(𝑥) = {15000 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 100
15000 + 125𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 100
15000 + 125(𝑥 − 100) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 100

➢ EVALUATING FUNCTION – replacing the variable in the function with a value from the function’s domain and
computing for the result. To denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).

𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙)
The function notation y = f(x) tells
you that y is a function of x (y is
dependent to the x). If there is a rule
relating y to x, such as y = 2x – 1,
then we can also write:
To evaluate the function, take the given value of x, and replace (substitute) that value for x in the expression.

Example 1: Evaluate the function f(x) = 2x + 4 at x = 3. Example 2: Evaluate the function g(x) = 2x + 3 at g(a + 1).

Solution: Just replace the variable x with 3 Solution:

f(3) = 2(3) + 4 g(a + 1) = 2(a + 1) + 3
f(3) = 6 + 4 g(a + 1) = 2a + 2 + 3

Therefore, f(3) = 10 Therefore, g(a + 1) = 2a + 5

𝑥 2 + 5 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 0
Example 3: If 𝑓(𝑥) = { find, f(-2) and f(4).
5𝑥 − 1 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 0

f(-2) f(4)
Solution: since -2 is less than 0, use the first Solution: since 4 is greater than 0, use the second
equation, 𝑥 2 + 5 equation, 5𝑥 − 1
f(-2) = (−2)2 + 5 f(4) = 5(4) – 1
f(-2) = 4 + 5 f(4) = 20 – 1

Therefore, f(-2) = 9 Therefore, f(4) = 19

A. Tell whether each statement is True or False.

1. The function notation 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) tells you that y is a function of x.

2. The notation 𝑓(𝑥) means “f times x”.
3. To evaluate a function, simply replace the value of x with the given number.
4. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 8, then 𝑓(−2) is 6.
5. If 𝑓(𝑥) = −3𝑥 + 4, then 𝑓(5) is -19.

B. Evaluate each function.

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 5 𝑎𝑡 𝑓(4)
2. ℎ(𝑏) = 3𝑏 2 − 2𝑏 + 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑏 = −3
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 3 𝑎𝑡 𝑓(3𝑏 − 2)

➢ OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS – functions can be defined in terms of other functions such that if we are given
𝑔
any two functions, g and h we can define the four new functions as g + h, g – h, gh, and .

For example, the function defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 is the sum of 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 and ℎ(𝑥) = 8𝑥

➢ COMPOSITION OF FUNCTION – substituting an entire function into another function.

Operations on Functions - Definition: For all the

values of x for which both g(x) and h(x) are defined,
Composition of Function - Definition: For the
we define the following:
functions f and g, the composite function or
Sum: (𝑔 + ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥) + ℎ(𝑥) composition of f and g, is given by (g ◦ f)(x) = g[f(x)]
for all x in the domain of f such that f(x) is in the
domain of g.
Difference: (𝑔 − ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥) − ℎ(𝑥)

Product: (𝑔ℎ)(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥) ∙ ℎ(𝑥)

𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)
Quotient: ( ) (𝑥) = ; ℎ(𝑥) ≠0
ℎ ℎ(𝑥)

Example 1: If 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 2 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 4, find:

a. (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) c. (𝑓𝑔)(𝑥)

𝑓
b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) d. ( ) (𝑥)
