What I Have Learned?

1. If I meet an argument with my sister, I would prefer to listen to her rant first, then will make her
calm, and I will communicate with her politely.
2. If I fall in some subjects, I would talk to my teachers and seek them considerations if I have valid
reasons.
3. If I would be late in the class, I would say sorry to my teachers and my classmates and I will ask
if it is okay for them for me to be in class.
4. If a friend betrays me, I would make him/her free and I will only pray for him/her.
5. If a relationship with my girlfriend becomes toxic, I would seek solutions to remove that
toxicity, but if I feel that there will be no more solutions, then I will break up with her and make her
free.
What I Can Do?
“Filipinos’ Pandemic SOLIDarity”

Since the imposition of Community Quarantine in the Philippines, many Filipinos are not
allowed to go outside to meet with their friends, peers, and love ones. Many of them only spend their
time with the task in their home which may really be disgusting, because it is natural for humans to
desire changing their task and activities daily. COVID-19 Pandemic negatively affects the Emotional
and Mental Health of Filipinos, because they are not satisfied with their situation, experience culture
shock, and experience stress, anxiety and depression.

As people become socially isolated because of lockdown to stem the transmission of virus,
many Filipinos are not satisfied with their situations, According to the research of Dr. Maria Cecilia
Gastardo-Conaco (one of the members of Social Sciences Division of DOST-NRCP), some of the top
10 emotions of Filipinos across the timeline of pandemic are being angry, concerned, anxious,
sarcastic, and helpless. It is because, according to the respondents, they have difficulties on working
or studying at home and their income is greatly affected because of skeletal work system and limited
movements of the people. This is also affected by social limited factors, such as people are not able
to do their leisure activities outside and to buy their wants in malls or in the market. People are also
socially isolated, which makes them feel behind the bars of their houses.

People need to follow the imposed health protocols everywhere so that they are experiencing
culture shock. Before the pandemic exist, people can be clingy with their friends or congested with
the transport system. They can breathe freely without wearing face mask and shield. They also can
go freely anytime anywhere. But today, they need to follow the safety health protocol to stem the
transmission of virus. For Filipinos, it is very huge adjustments for the activities and social norm that
has been became their hobbies. Instead of shaking hands, a bow is an alternative in paying respect
or formally greeting a friend or other people. Instead of hugs and kisses, a fingerheart and a “Hi”
gesture is an alternative in greeting friends and loved ones. For the Filipinos who are greatly devoted
with these traditional cultures that have been stopped because of this pandemic, they may be
experiencing culture shock. According to an anthropologist George M. Foster, “Culture shock is a
mental illness, and as is true of much mental illness, the victim usually does not know that he is
afflicted.”
Because the majority of Filipinos experiences terrible situation, there is a high rate of stress,
anxiety and depression. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), even before the COVID-
19 Pandemic, the Philippines had already one of the highest rates of depression in Southeast Asia.
According to the report of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in the year 2010, there were 14% or
1.4 Million Filipinos have a mental disorder. This means that Filipinos experience mental health
issues even before pandemic. During the crisis, a lot of news that are disappointing to hear is very
rampant about the COVID-19. This increase fear and nervousness of Filipinos with regards to their
health and their health and economic situations. It has reached to the point that Filipinos must choose
whether to choose between economy and health. With these social problems in addition to their
personal problems, it is evidently that Filipinos are experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.
With these instances, the pandemic really have negative effects to the mental and emotional
health of Filipinos, which include unsatisfied situation, culture shock, stress, anxiety and depression.
Those who are in control and power should make programs to lessen these issues of mental health,
or at least enhance their responses to eradicate the virus, so that Filipinos can get back to their usual
habits, and also to lessen their problems. Lastly, pepple should help each other to sustain their
emotional and mental needs.

Additional Activities
