“Birthday Gold Medal”

an Essay Written by Josh Auel J. Buenviaje

People have different significant events that impacted them the most. It may be quite simple or
more complex events. It may be also in a positive or in a negative way. Those events may also
impact or affected the people around them. Many people because of their horrible experiences
traumatized because of their weak emotions, but others treated these horrible experiences as their
inspiration and motivation to pursue their goals and ambitions. I myself have those best and horrible
experiences. My participation and winning the competition Araling Panlipunan 4 Quiz Bee is the most
significant event in my life that impacted me the most and led to attain my goals and ambitions.
During my primary school days, although I belong to the star section, I didn’t experienced
joining a competition because our advisers that time always choose the honor students to join
competitions, specifically Quiz Bee and other brainstorming competitions. But during those times, I
loved reading history and geography books because I really felt interested reading those books. I can
easily understand the contents of that history books. Before I sleep, I tend to request my grandmother
to read me a booklet about the life of our national heroes. During my early school years, I became an
introvert and shy to recite during our History Classes. That feeling that when our teacher that time
asks about things and matters in history, I know the answers, but I felt shy to share my insights.

But it all started during my 4th Grade, for some reasons, I already have the courage to recite in
our Araling Panlipunan Class. It started that I rarely recite until I can already continuously recite and
share my insights and knowledge. Until one day, our subject teacher gave me and my two honor
student classmates a task; that we will be joining a competition – and that is the Grade 4 Araling
Panlipunan Quiz Bee Competition. Afterwards, we trained ourselves with the guidance of our teacher
on all the lessons in Araling Panlipunan Grade 4 that includes Philippine History and Geography. At
first, I was shocked because there a lot of things that I still don’t know.

September 12, 2013, my Birthday and also the Day of Competition, I woke up early to review
my notes that can be included in the questions during the quiz bee. Fast forward, the competition
started. We represent our school and we have 20 other Public Schools and 1 Private School
competitors. Then, after some matter of minutes to an hour, the quiz bee ended. The scores were
tallied. And we were shocked, because we got the highest score! We won as champions! I received
my first ever gold medal during my first time in competition and during my 11th Birthday.

One week after, we participated in the Division Level of Araling Panlipunan Quiz Bee in Pila,
Laguna. We won as 4th Place during that competition, but we are already satisfied with that outcome
especially me, because that was really the first time that I compete with a brainstorming competition
with my interest subject. At the end of the School Year, I’ve been recognized by our school during the
recognition day for my participation for that competition.

After that particular event in my life, I can say that I started dreaming. I become interested
reciting all over again not only in Araling Panlipunan but also in other subjects in school. That event
gave me courage to pursue the good things that I want. Despite of my humiliating challenges and
experiences that I face even during the present time, I can handle those breakdown situations by
looking at the positive side and noticing the main reasons why I want to pursue my dreams. I can
proudly say that I’m dreaming to become an Araling Panlipunan Teacher someday because, like my
Elementary Teacher who chose me to join that competition that then became my inspiration and
motivation to pursue my dreams, I want also to inspire the future generations so that they can find
their interests and ambitions in life.

I am Josh Auel J. Buenviaje, soon-to-be Araling Panlipunan Licensed Professional Teacher,

inspired and motivated to pursue my dreams because of my Birthday Gold Medal.

Additional Activities
1. What are the challenges you experience in middle adolescence?
ANSWER: I have a lot of challenges that I experienced and I cannot enumerate those one by one,
but the greatest challenge that I faced during my young adulthood is when I commit to someone
which I don’t really love, but she loved me a lot. That time when I decided to cut my commitment to
her, she really felt broken, which I regret the most. I realized that, “Masakit ang masaktan, pero mas
masakit ang makasakit.”
2. How do you manage problems during adolescence?
ANSWER: I manage it in a manner that I think of solutions to it, and if those problems were nonsense
problems, I only distract myself on positive things.
3. What life situation issues you think that more challenging as adolescence?
ANSWER: I think, age, because as my age gets older, the more the responsibilities I should be
acted. I should think twice if my decision will be the righteous one, because as I get older also, the
expectations of the society in me become also higher.
