a) Who was the King that supported the trip of the settlers to America? The king who supported the trip, was
James.

b) Which were the intentions of the King to help this expedition? he wanted to prevent the Spanish
advancement in the new world and let the English get a claim on some colonies in North America,
and also wanted to help try to find a quicker passage to Asia.

c) What was the Virginia Company? The Virginia Company had the power to establish settlements on the
coast of North America.

d) Why did many investors and settlers go with the Virginia Company? Shareholders invested money in the
expectation of recovering their wealth.

e) How many people travelled to the New World? When did they go? 105 people traveled to the new world in
December 1606.

f) When and where did they arrive? They arrived in Virginia in April 1607.

g) Why was selected an island to be the location of Jamestown? They chose the island because it was located
fer inland and the Spaniards would not see them so easily there was a river where they could
anchor the boats because it was far enough inland for them to see them.

h) What was the name of the native Tribe that lived in the Virginia Area? How many people were they? in the
Powhatan tribe there were 14 thousand inhabitants.

i) Which were the cultural characteristics of that native Tribe? In that tribe practiced communal ownership of
the land and worshipped their spirits in nature.

j) What happened to the settlers during “The Starving Time”? And, why did that happen? When they arrived in
Virginia, they only wanted to look for gold, and they knew nothing about agriculture or planting, so
they went through a period of hunger and disease.

k) What were the contributions of John Smith to the Virginia Company? John Smith took the lead and imposed
a law “he who does not reap, does not eat”.

l) What were the contributions of John Rolfe to Jamestown? The firs to make a commercial crop is Jhohn
Rolf, who in 1612 created a milder tabacco that became very popular in England.

m) Who was Pocahontas? And, what is her connection with the Virginia Company? Pocahontas was the daughter
of the leader of the Powhatan tribe of Virginia , she saved John Smith.

n) Which were the advantages the Tobacco brought to Jamestown? Tobacco became a cash crop they could
sell, and John Rolf eventually married Pocahontas bringing peace to the English and Native
Americans.

o) What is the connection between Tobacco, servants and slaves? The English did not want to do manual
labor, so the slaves had to harvest the tobacco.
