“The way you see and treat elderlies today, will be reflected tomorrow.” - Bilbao
Instruction: Write your opinion on the topic “Are today’s seniors different from the past?”
Reflect on your ideas on how you see the elderlies around you, whether they are your
grandparents, neighbors, or just anybody in your community, and compare the elderlies
today with the past. For you to have a comparison, you may interview your parents
and/or grandparents and find out their general outlook on elderlies when they were your
age. (Minimum of 300 words)
You may follow these questions while writing a narrative.
1. How do these elderlies live old age?
2. What characteristics do these elderlies have?
3. Do the elderlies necessitate for importance being part of the community?
4. Do elderlies require respect from the young people? Are they asking for respect?
5. How are today’s elderlies different from the past?
Geriatrics has been widely studied in recent years, especially in the context of
differentiating how past and present lifestyle have drastically changed over the years.
Elderly is the final period of human life and this is the time a person needs love and
affection and proper elderly care. It is said that caring for the elderly is the moral duty of
every man. For me, old age is a great time to sit back and enjoy where you already feel
fulfilled and accomplished living the remaining days of your life and seizing can be a
significant contributor to healthy aging. Personally, the idea of living a very long and
happy life is a goal that is universal for me is what a meaningful living in this lifetime
would be.

Based on my research and observation in the community, seniors with a

productive and purposeful life tend to live longer and shares common characteristics in
all facet. These positive thinkers are hopeful and always searching for solutions in all
circumstances they go through. Additionally, they are resilient enough to adapt easily on
any situations and accept things they have no control with and recover from them.
Furthermore, they also practice active lifestyle that can produce healthy mindset, reduce
the risk of a variety of diseases that is beneficial to longevity and happy life. These
seniors were also able to prioritize their passion and stress, focusing on the things that
really matter. In addition, they are not easily swayed by others' opinions and follow their
heart by having great decision-making skills.

Moreover, those who have lived long lives are also involved with other things that
create close bonds as well, such as religion, community, or other organizations. Having
these bonds and relationships provide them with support, engagement, and beautiful
memories. With that being said, older people desire to feel included and useful and
staying engaged in communities are apparent active engagement as a factor in healthy
ageing. On the positive side, including enjoyment through helping family and
participating in community activities, staying away from stress, and making merit and
helping other people without expecting anything in return is the highest level for
reaching healthy aging.
In my opinion, elderlies are the age group that needs most attention and patience
to handle as they are losing their independence and are vulnerable in all aspects. The
elders spend their golden days in shaping our lives, hence it is our responsibility to
repay them in their old age. My grandparents raised us to believe in the importance of
treating others with courtesy and respect so I have learned to reciprocate it as well to
people especially elderlies as they also want support, love, and care from us.

Although there is a definite difference and gap between past and present
lifestyles, the difference between these two concepts may differ according to diverse
facets. Therefore, it can be a very subjective topic and the differences here might differ
in various people’s experience. Nevertheless, the key difference between past and
present lifestyles of elderlies is that the past lifestyle can be described as a simple,
traditional, home-based lifestyle with a self-sufficient economy and simple living. On the
other hand, present lifestyle, is complex, efficient, comfortable, and modern, highly
technological, and is based on a profit maximizing production economy. In conclusion, I
would say that we have improved a lot for the better and I would still prefer the present
lifestyle as it is convenient and effiecient to practice in this modern generation.
