Topic: Many elderly are no longer looked after by their families but are put in care

homes or nursing homes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this
trend?

As the years pass by, changes occur in the way families care for their
elderly. And one of the most flagrant changes has been the trend to place elderly
family members in care homes instead of looking after them at home. This stays a
very controversial subject, but like any other trend, it has its advantages and
disadvantages that I’ll be discussing in this essay.

To begin with, specialized nurses and trained professionals usually work at

care homes, which means that elderly people receive specialized health care and
attention all day long. In addition, in case of an emergency, a doctor is always
there to help. Nursing homes also ensure that every elderly gets therapy and
social support by engaging them in recreational activities to maintain their well-
being and keeping them at the same time active and happy. Another advantage is
that seniors tend to be more lively and joyful in this kind of home because it is
easier for them to make friends there than feel neglected by the younger
generation back at home.
However, there are also some negative aspects to this trend. Sending your
family member, who took time to raise you, to a nursing house because you don’t
have time to look after them, could affect their mental health. Thus, this could
also affect their physical health. Time is precious, we can never know how much
time we have with our loved ones, so we should hold on to them while we still
have the chance. A person before sending his parent away should think about
how would he feel if someone took him away from his child. On top of this, most
care homes are extremely expensive and do not provide the promised services.
Instead, they treat the seniors with disrespect and don’t care at all about their
emotional health.

To conclude, this trend like any other has both advantages and
disadvantages. We can safely say that the decision of putting a loved one in a care
house is very difficult. At the end of the day, every family knows what’s best for
their family members considering their situation and needs.
