1. A sand stratum is 12m thick. The water table is 4m below ground level. The unit

weight of sand layer above and below water table is 17.5 kN/m3 & 21 kN/m3

respectively. The capillary rise above W.T is 2m. Draw the effective stress, pore

water pressure & Total stress diagram for the sand stratum.

2. A granular soil deposit 8m deep over an impermeable layer. The ground W.T is

4m below ground level. The deposit has a zone of capillary rise of 2m with a

saturation of 50%. Plot the variation of Total, Pore water & Effective pressure

diagram with e = 0.6 & G = 2.65.

3. Explain the factors affecting compaction.

4. The following are the results of a compaction test. Volume of mould = 1000ml;
mass of mould = 1000gm, G=2.70. Plot the following. a) Find the moisture dry
density & OMC by compaction curve b) Zero air void line curve. Determine the

curve, determine the optimum moisture content and the corresponding maximum dry
density.

6. A sample of soil for a constant head permeability test gives the following data:
Diameter of permeameter is 76mm; length of soil sample is 200mm; head flow is
150mm; quantity of water collected in 10min is 150ml; G=2.65; saturated unit weight
of soil is 20kN/m3. Determine, (a) Co-efficient of permeability of soil in cm/sec, (b)
superficial velocity (c) seepage velocity.
7. A pumping out test was carried out in the field in order to determine the average
coefficient of permeability of 18m thick sand layer. The ground water table is at a
depth of 2.2m below the ground level. A steady state was reached when the discharge
from the well was 21.5 liter/sec. At this stage the drawdown in the test well was
2.54m while the drawdown in the two observation wells situated at 8m and 20m from
the test well were found to be 1.76m and 1.27m respectively. Find the coefficient of
permeability and radius of influence.
8. Define, flow net; flow line; equipotential line; flow channel & field. Mention the
applications of flow net.
