CH-1 INTRODUCTION

HISTORY

• In 1953 electroluminescence in organic material was observed.

• Then, first organic LED with driving voltage of 10V was discovered in 1987

• The making of first PLED is credited to Cavendish Laboratory Of Cambridge

University in 1989.

• First LEP discovered was Polyphenylene vinylene(PPV).

• A light emitting polymer is an electro-luminescent plastic. The molecules of this

plastic emit light when an electric field applied.

Why PLED..?
• As polymer is light in weight and flexible PLED contains these behaviour and due
to this they can be simply used to make thin films.

• Due to high resolution they provide high imaging quality.

• It can be seen from any angle.

• It consumes less power and offers high brightness.

• They can be used to male flexible and thin display.

DEVICE STRUCTURE
• A transparent anode with a large work function. Generally Indium Tin Oxide is
used.

• A conducting polymer layer which transports and injects holes into the active layer.

• A thin light emitting polymer layer less than 100nm thick.

• A metallic cathode with a low work function, such as aluminium.

• A substrate usually made up of transparent plastic to support the P-LED.

FABRICATION
P-LED FABRICATION STEPS…

The substrate is cleaned and kept in dust free area.

The multilayer deposition of the polymer takes

place through the Spin Coating or Organic Vapor
Phase Deposition method.

The electrode contacts are incorporated by

Vacuum Evaporation process.

CH-4 TYPES OF PLED
TYPES…
• There are mainly 3 types of LEP (P-LED)

1. Flexible Organic Light Emitting Polymers(FOLEP).

2. Transparent Organic Light Emitting

Polymers(TOLEP).

3. Stacked Organic Light Emitting Polymers(SOLEP).

Flexible Organic Light Emitting
Polymers(FOLEP).

• It is built on a flexible substrate.

• They have the ability to conform, bend or roll a display into any shape.

• They are less fragile and more impact resistant.

• Ultra lightweight and thin form.

Transparent Organic Light Emitting
Polymers(TOLEP).
• Substrate is transparent and LEP is sandwiched between 2 transparent
layers.

• Top and bottom emitting layers.

• More than 70% transparent when turned off.

• High resolution, better efficiency and faster response.

Stacked Organic Light Emitting
Polymers(SOLEP).
• It is an array of vertically stacked TOLEP sub-pixels.

• Color is tuned by individually controlling R-G-B sub pixels.

• Brightness is adjusted by adjusting the total current in the stack.

• It will only turn on the desired color pixel only and because of true color
quality it can be used in large displays.
