INTEREST AND PURPOSE

Early life conditions, immediately after egg hatching, such as

feeding, drinking water availability and house conditions, may
influence the development of the pullets.

Different studies have shown that early dehydration leads to

increased mortality, loss of live weight, decreased yolk sac reserve,
reduced feed intake and weight gain, lower body temperatures
associated to minor resistance and immune response.

In commercial incubators, chicks hatch in a period of 24-36 hours.

After the normal hatching operations, day-old chicks are
transported from the incubator to the farms. The transport period
can take up to 24 hours, during which the chicks do not receive
water or food.
The result can be significant loss of body weight and sub-optimal
growth performance.

The present assay aims to examine the effect of early hydration with
HIDRACHICKTM, Hydrating Gel for Poultry in the early
development of the animals.

200 turkey hatchlings ( male and female ) were obtained from a

commercial hatchery, individually weighed, and randomly placed
in boxes (Group A and Group B).

The animals were given a three-hour heat stress. Subsequently the

transport conditions were simulated: one-day-old turkey pullets
were distributed in groups of 100 animals in plastic transport boxes
with small lateral perforations to ensure aeration, provided with
four divisions. A temperature of 26 ° C was secured, with constant
air flow for 24 hours.

One of the groups received the treatment with the product

HIDRACHICKTM, Hydrating Gel for Poultry.
The product was administered ad libitum in an acetate device placed
in the transport box divisions.

After the simulated transport conditions, the groups of animals

were accommodated under the usual conditions of soil breeding:
they were offered feed and water ad libitum and the comfort
temperature was maintained by means of heat lamps

The general condition of the animals, signs of adverse effects and

mortality were examined daily during 8 days.

The mortality rate in the control group coincides with what is

usually observed in turkey breeding.
However, the zero mortality in the treated group may lead to a
conclusion that the administration of the product under the
conditions described, does not increase mortality, but rather it
protects against possible mortality.

 General condition and growth rate :

Daily, the general condition of the animals and signs of adverse
effects were examined.

Day All the selected animals are in good condition, alert and
1 showing vitality. No differences are observed between the
control and the treated group.

The pullets are alert and show interest for the product.

Day No product remains in the box of the treated group.

2
At the farm : Treated animals show a major vitality and
eagerness.

At the farm : The animals of the control group crowd quickly

together to drinker.

Day No apparent differences between the two groups are

5 observed.
Day No apparent differences between the two groups are
9 observed.

TOLERANCE : Good.

No effects associated with the administration of the product, were

observed.
No differences were seen in the faeces (more aqueous or not) of the
treated group. There are no dead animals in the control group so it
can not be determined whether excessive intake of the product
produces a negative effect.

HIDRACHICKTM, Gel preparation

1. The gel was prepared at SPVeterinaria on 15/09/2016:

107 g HIDRACHICKTM, Hydrating Gel for Poultry per 1 liter
drinking water.

The mixture is carried out in containers with a lid :

Add the powder to the water and add 2 – 3 stainless steel

shaker balls of about 5 cm diameter. Close the lid tightly and
shake the container. This will ensure homogeneous mixing.
The blender balls are necessary to avoid lump formation.
Finally, remove the blender balls from the liquid and leave to
rest, during at least 5 hours, in a cool, clean and ventilated
place.
During this period a solid gel is formed, green colour.
Wash the blender balls with water and let dry for the next use.

3 blender balls for 5 L gel ( 535 g de HIDRACHICK / 5 L )

2. Application : The gel is applied with a device similar to a

pastry bag.

3. Appearance : : The gel has a green colour and a mousse-like

granular aspect.

4. Administration : The gel is put on an acetate device, that

can be placed in the transport boxes.

5. Acceptance :
The animals show interest for the HIDRACHICKTM gel, they
start eating it immediately.

Auxiliary material:

1. Blender ball: allows the dissolution of the powder in an optimal

way for the formation of a foamy and homogeneous gel

2. Pastry bag: allows a clean, controlled and homogenous

application of the gel. Disposable plastic bags have been used.

3. Plastic device for the transport box.

In this case acetate supports were used as hanging service tray.
The service trays depend on the locally available hatchery and
poultry equipment.

ON-FARM use : the gel can be placed in the normal feeders or

placed on chick-paper.

Summary :

HIDRACHICKTM is a hydrating gel that contains a high

percentage of available water, and carbohydrate nutrient. It
corrects the loss of water in birds during the first days of life during
transport and stress situations.

HIDRACHICK is specially formulated for day-old broiler and

turkey pullets :

• In trays after sorting the pullets.

• During transport.
• At farm arrival.
