ROMANESQUE ART & ARCHITECTURE
• It started during the middle age
• It was the first style all over the Europe.
• Romanesque architecture is inspired by Roman Architecture
• It can be characterized by round arches, stone materials & basilica type plan.
• In between 1075-1125 AD
CHARACTERISTICS
• Proportions- harmonious
• Vaulting system- barrel and groin
vault
• Thick and heavy walls and pillars.
• Small windows
• Round arches supporting the roof
• Blind arches- decorative purpose
• Galleries above the side aisles
• A transept, an apse, ambulatory.
• Multiple towers , usually at the
west end and the transept crossing
• Sculptural decoration on portals,
capitals and other surface
• Painted decoration through out the
interior
