Lesson Plan in: General Mathematics
I. CONTENT/ TOPIC: Domain and Range of Rational Functions
● UNDERSTANDING
II. OBJECTIVES:
a. Define domain and range
b. Solve for domain and range of rational functions
III. REFERENCE
IV. Teaching Procedures/ Strategies:
Lesson: Domain and Range of Rational Functions
a. ACTIVITY: Concept Note #11
Rational functions
A rational function is a function of the form:
p( x )
f ( x )=
q( x )
where p and q are polynomials, and q ≠ 0
Domain – the x values
Range – the y values
p (x)
The domain of a rational function f(x) = is all the values of x that will not
q(x)
make q (x) equal to zero.
To find the range of rational function is by finding the domain of the inverse
function.
Another way to find the range of rational function is to find the value of
horizontal asymptote.
Example 1:
2
f ( x )=
x−3
x–3=0 The domain of f(x) is the set of
x=3 all real numbers except 3
2
y=
x−3
2
x=
y−3
x (y – 3) = 2
xy – 3x = 2
xy 2+3 x
=
x x
2+3 x
y=
x
x=0 The range of f(x) is the set of all
real numbers except 0
Example 2:
x−5
f ( x )=
x +2
x+2=0
The domain of f(x) is the set of
x = -2
all real numbers except -2
x−5
y=
x +2
y−5
x=
y +2
x (y+2) = y -5
xy + 2y = y – 5
xy – y = -5 – 2x
y (x−1) −5−2 x
=
x−1 x−1
−5−2 x
y=
x−1
x–1=0 The range of f(x) is the set of all
x=1
real numbers except 1
Example 3:
(x−4)(x +2)
f ( x )=
( x −3)( x−1)
x–3=0 x–1=0
x=3 x=1
The domain of f(x) is the set of
all real numbers except 3 and 1
Horizontal Asymptote Concept:
2
x −6 x−8
f ( x )= n<m, y = 0
x ²−4 x+ 3
a
n=m, y=
b
n > m, there is no horizontal
asymptote
1
=1 The range of f(x) is the set of all
1
real numbers except 1
b. ANALYSIS:
What are the ways you can use to get the range of rational functions.
c. ABSTRACTION
What is domain and range of rational functions?
d. ASSESSMENT:
Find the domain and range of the following:
2 x+1
f ( x )=
x −3
3 x−6
f ( x )=
x +2
V. ASSIGNMENT: Prepare for graded recitation
