Art Nouveau 2

T1.2 Art Nouveau Exhibition

Strengthening the cultural identity of the Danube region by

building on common heritage of ART NOUVEAU

Project co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF, IPA, ENI)

We aim to reunite in an exhibition samples of Art Nouveau and Secession architectural and design
silhouettes, dated 1900-1914, in the intracarpatic and extracarpatic Romania.

Depending on the typology of building functions (conceptual clarity, quality of living, structure and
materiality and quality and coherence of representation) the exhibition will present examples of architecture
from all over Romania.

The exhibition will raise questions about how has this style evolved and how can it be "read"?

We are determined to find different answers capable of outlining a common horizon and we propose an Art
Nouveau exhibition dedicated to Gesamtkunstwerk. Regardless of function, we are seduced by the different
shapes, poetic light, various types of exterior or interior decorations, doors, fireplaces, etc. ...

We know that there are not many examples of buildings in this style that retain their original interior design,
but all of them have in common the effort to confess with different densities the architectural
phenomenon Art Nouveau in Romania and how it coexisted with the international one in the early
twentieth century.

The exhibition will then be toured later to the: Pelișor Castle (3 months), Palace of Culture in Târgu Mureș (1
month), Electrical Water Turbines in Timișoara (1 month) and Casino in Constanța (1 month).

The exhibition will open in the spring of 2022 in the Pelisor Castle, it will be connected with all the rooms
and objects exhibited in the museum belonging to or designed by Queen Maria. In Pelișor Castle are
exhibited Wiener Werkstatte objects (Gustav Klimt and Joseph Franz Maria Hoffmann), as well as Émile
Gallé, René Lalique, Karl Fabergé, L.C. Tiffany, Alphonse Maria Mucha, F. Benedikt von Poschinger,
Bernhard Ludwig (father & son), J. Tostrup, Loetz Wietwe, Daum brothers, Almaric Walter & Henri Bergé,
Jean Sala, Christian Désiré, F. Ehrbar, Max Ströbl, R. Fournier for Villeroy Boch-Mettlach, Viktor Suchanek,
Auguste Moreau, G. Gurschner, etc. ...

Each object has its own story at Pelișor Castle, built 1899 – 1902, where Queen Maria, with the help of
architect Karel Liman and craftsman Bernhard Ludwig, created a continuum - a place where the imaginary
space takes precedence over the real one. Regardless of function, we are seduced by the poetic light, various
types of parietal and ceilings decorations, doors, fireplaces, etc. ... Starting from choosing the right scale of
the stairways to make the music sound harmonious, to choosing the colors of the different daily routine
rooms.
