Judge Clarence opening

(Bangs Gavel)

The court is now in session.

Today we shall be debating on the topic of whether or not “violent video games should be

banned”, the starting date of the case is September 22 2021, 12:00 PM.

There are two conflicting parties serving as the defense and prosecution and each comprised of

two members who will be debating on the following topic, along with several witnesses who

shall be brought up to be questioned.

Against Banning violent video games, we have Christopher and Hansen. As for the opposing

side, we have Louise and Robby who are both in favor of banning violent video games. Louise

and Robby, provided no other matters to be dealt with, you may start your case.

Why Video Games Should be Banned – Louise 1

- Thank you judge Clarence.

- video games, it has always been a controversial topic.

- For years video have been blamed as a leading instigator of social anxiety, weight gain

and depressive disorders.

- All these are only the tip of the iceberg.

- Diving deeper into the video games iceberg we have violent video games, many people

choose to believe that violent video games are the major cause of childhood trauma,

leading to mental instability, which could push them towards a dangerous path.

- Violent video games are a damaging influence for the youth

- these games could cause serious mental problems for underaged children under the age

of 12 especially in the lack of adult supervision, which is likely as no good parent would

allow their kids to play these violent video games.

Objection!

Why Video Games Should not be Banned – Christopher, 1

- Okay, violent games might cause mental problems in people’s minds, but what are the

actual chances of that actually happening?

- While actual scientific research has concluded that violent video games may be able to

develop critical decision-making processes for children who play them up to 25% faster

than the average child.

Hold it!

Why Video Games Should be Banned – Louise 2

- Ok sure, maybe it does have a few positive effects, however no responsible parent

would risk their child being afflicted with a mental disorder.

- Scientists proved that children who play violent video games regularly are more prone

to aggressive behavior than children who don’t.

- Some well-known video games, particularly violent ones have gambling systems

implemented such as “loot crates“ and “gatchas” which target children, causing them to

develop gambling addictions at a young age.

- This may lead to future gambling problems.

- Children who are easily manipulated could start playing “pay to play” games, where

players must pay to maintain a playing account in game, some children would pay with

their parent’s money, without their permission or notice, sometimes not knowing the

value of how much they are paying, which could lead to thousands of dollars lost. These

are very bad traits especially for little kids.

- Playing violent video games could quickly lead to anger issues notably in competitive

games, where wins and losses are weighted more.

- These anger issues could quickly lead to toxic behaviors in online games where toxic

individuals would get angered because of a mistake or bad luck and start raging, taking

out their anger on teammates, controllers, keyboards or themselves. These would

negate the main point of playing games which is to have fun and might instigate

cyberbullying.

- I believe violent video games should be either restricted to a certain age group or just be

outright banned for the children under the age of 17. Sure, violent games might be

“fun” but are they worth the severe risks they are coupled with?

Objection!

Why Video Games Should not be Banned – Christopher, 2

- Games have been around for a long period of time.

- The first video game dates back to around the 1960s.

- Since then, video games have evolved immensely and improved in all sorts of ways.

- Games have gotten more and more immersive and interactive in their stories, and

graphics are even more similar to the world we live in today

- These days game genres are sparse as game studios have found what works and what

doesn’t, but one genre in particular has been getting a lot of love and as much hate over

the past years.

- Of course, the one I’m talking about are violent video games
- Violent video games deliver intense and brutal gameplay intended for more mature

audiences

- Most games have been given an age restrictions to prevent certain age groups from

playing certain games that have certain content, however this hasn’t stopped children

from playing violent video games and accessing their content.

- Violent video games have been perceived as if they were as bad as drugs, but this is just

not the case.

- Video games can actually improve both our body and mind and develop skills and traits

that can’t be achieved in any other way.

- As I said before violent video games, particularly the fast-paced games such as call of

duty and battlefield forces players to make quick decisions and improve both their

decision making and hand eye coordination up to 25% faster than the average child who

doesn’t.

- Children who play more interactive and story-driven video games such as resident evil

have been shown to have improved motor skills, this means that they can kick or throw

the ball better than the average child.

- Video games in general can improve eyesight as their eyes are more adapted to wider

range of colors.
- Video games can also help people with their psychological needs as they are allowed to

relax and immerse themselves in the story.

- Clarence, may I call up a witness?

Judge Clarence –

- You may

Witness Calling 1

- Chris = I call Jonathan Wahono to the podium please.

- Chris = may I know the length at which you play violent video games per day?

- Jonathan = umm around 3 to 5 hours give or take.

- Chris = so would you call yourself, say … a violent video game enjoyer?

- Jonathan = yeah, I would say so.

- Chris = as a student yourself, have video games significantly impacted your studies in

any way?

- Jonathan = surprisingly no, I’ve been able to keep track of both my studies and video

games
- Chris = so, would you say you can control yourself when you are playing any video

games?

- Jonathan = I would say so.

- Chris = So video games have no impact on school studies and I believe that video games

have a lot of benefits that are such a waste to pass on. I rest my case

Why Video Games Should be Banned – Robby

- In today’s world, Millions upon Millions of people are playing video games at this

moment.

- However, a certain Stigma against video games has remained after all these years

- Some people believe that violent video games in particular are rotting the minds of the

people and causing them to turn increasingly violent even disobeying their own parents

as a result

- Yes, Violent video games should be banned. I believe that these games cause violence in

young minds and wasting their time.

- Violent Games such are Mortal Kombat and Tekken Poses great risk on many children

mental health as it will increase their cognitive aggressiveness

- Violent Competitive games can cause people to be overly competitive and neurotic.

- These violent competitive games are made to be addicting, so that people that are

gullible will waste more and more time playing game instead of using time for a more

productive activity.

- These competitive games can also make people develop dopamine addictions and

restlessness.

- Violent video games focusing on committing crimes such as GTA V are worrying as they

involve the shooting of firearm, and committing crimes like bank robbing, stabbing, and

crashing cars onto people

- Kids are also easily influenced by other people and would follow kids who are already

sucked into these games and could start committing real world crimes.

- The number of young people over the years have increased exponentially, with the

increasing popularity of these games, child predators might start to rise as children are

more gullible online.

- Violent video games cause violence and at best it is a waste of time.

- I believe that there need to be a stricter restriction of these violent games

- precautions and regulation need to be enforced to save people from doing terrible

things

Why Video Games Should not be Banned – Hansen

- video games are every child’s favorite leisure activity all over the world, either it is

offline or online.

- These games especially violent ones are despised by almost every parent, but why are

they despised?

- Fake medias have stirred up the minds of people about violent video games especially to

parent.

- But researchers have proven again and again that video games have a lot of advantages

for children and rather less disadvantages.

- These skeptics still continue to preach this belief despite countless scientific showing

that are there no connection between violent video games and violent behavior.

- Violent video games are not the only entertainment which shows much violence, sport

such as boxing, mixed martial arts, wrestling are much Purer form violence. If you say

violence video games should be banned, shouldn’t these sport be banned too?

- These violent Sport have never received any sort of criticism from people, it makes no

sense at all to say that violent games are bad but violent sports are fine.
- Moreover, I believer that playing violent video games are a bad idea to ban, as they hold

a large margin of the video games market, banning them would be as devastating to the

market as if all their limbs are gone.

- These violent video games have a very large audience and are a major part of our

gaming community

- Banning these games will do more harm than good, as a lot of companies would get

bankrupt and people would be unemployed. Plus, banning these games would degrade

children’s morale as if you take away a child’s doll.

- In Conclusion, there is no point in banning violent games as they will cause more

problem than it solves.
