09/27/2020 Wel com e to the Fir st Cl a ss of the Y ea r !! The Bahá’í Faith
Teacher: Cindy Van Kley 405-630-4504 cindyvankley@gmail.com If you need help understanding
your homework, please call or email me!
YOU WILL HAVE HOMEWORK EVERY WEEK. 1.) Memory verse to practice until you can say it without
looking at the paper and 2.) Five questions to answer in your journal. If you work on one each evening they
won’t take much time! You must ask your parent to initial your homework sheet each day that you work on it,
but ONLY if you actually DO work on it that day. You will earn points for “points shopping” for doing homework.
Remember:
As a Bahá’í, you will need to be able to tell others what the Bahá’í Faith is. Every Bahá’í is a teacher! You will
need to be able to answer questions about Basic Teachings, about Bahá’í History, and Spiritual Ideas about
God and the Purpose of Life on Earth. The extra pages in this assignment are for your reference throughout
this year, so you can answer your own questions about the Bahá’í Faith, as well as those of your friends and
family who may ask you questions. You can always say, “I don’t know but I can find out and get back to you!”
Look up the answer, and be sure that you understand the answer well enough to explain it to someone else by
practicing saying your answer out loud to yourself several times. Then you will be ready to go back to the one
who asked and tell them, “I found the answer to your question about the Bahá’í Faith. Here’s what I found
out:______________.”
I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to
worship Thee…..
Bahá’u’lláh
Please READ THE HANDOUT and ponder the questions, remember the discussion in class,
then write your answers in your Journal. Write the Assignment number at the top of the
page: “Assignment 1.0” . You don’t need to write the question, just the question number and
the answer. Make sure you answer both parts of any 2-part questions!
1) What is a Bahá’í ?
2) What is service to others? Give 2 examples.
3) Tell us any 3 facts about Bahá’u’lláh’s life.
4) Name a Bahá’í Teaching about equality.
5) Who is God? What do you know about Him?
PARENTS please initial each day the student practices and works on readings/questions:
Wikipedia
The Bahá'í Faith (Arabic: ﺑﮭﺎﺋﯾﺔBaha'iyy) /bəˈhaɪ/[1]) is a monotheistic religion emphasizing the spiritual
unity of all humankind.[2] Three core principles make a basis for Bahá'í teachings and doctrine: the unity of
God, that there is only one God who is the source of all creation; the unity of religion, that all major
religions have the same spiritual source and come from the same God; and the unity of humanity, that all
humans have been created equal, and that diversity of race and culture are seen as worthy of
appreciation and acceptance.[3] According to the Bahá'í Faith's teachings, the human purpose is to learn to
know and love God through such methods as prayer, reflection and being of service to humanity.
The Bahá'í Faith was founded by Bahá'u'lláh in 19th-century Persia. Bahá'u'lláh was exiled for his
teachings, from Persia to the Ottoman Empire, and died while officially still a prisoner. After Bahá'u'lláh's
death, under the leadership of his son, `Abdu'l-Bahá, the religion spread from its Persian and Ottoman
roots, and gained a footing in Europe and America, and was consolidated in Iran, where it suffers
intense persecution.[4] After the death of `Abdu'l-Bahá, the leadership of the Bahá'í community entered a
new phase, evolving from a single individual to an administrative order with both elected bodies and
appointed individuals.[5] There are probably more than 5 million Bahá'ís around the world in more than 200
countries and territories.[3][6]
In the Bahá'í Faith, religious history is seen to have unfolded through a series of divine messengers, each
of whom established a religion that was suited to the needs of the time and to the capacity of the people.
These messengers have included Abrahamic figures,Moses, Jesus, Muhammad as well
as Dharmic ones, Krishna, Buddha, and others. For Bahá'ís, the most recent messengers are the
Báb and Bahá'u'lláh. In Bahá'í belief, each consecutive messenger prophesied of messengers to follow,
and Bahá'u'lláh's life and teachings fulfilled the end-time promises of previous scriptures. Humanity is
understood to be in a process of collective evolution, and the need of the present time is for the gradual
establishment of peace, justice and unity on a world-wide scale.[7]

Bahá'í at a glance
The Bahá'í faith is one of the youngest of the world's major religions. It was founded by
Bahá'u'lláh in Persia in 1863. A Bahá’í is a follower of Bahá’u’lláh and His Teachings.
Persia (now Iran) was then mainly a Muslim country, and the faith was proclaimed by a young
Persian, who called himself The Báb. He said that a messenger would soon arrive from God, who
would be the latest in a line of prophets including Moses, Muhammad and Jesus Christ.
• Bahá'u'lláh, which means the Glory of God in Arabic, was born Mirza Husayn Ali in 1817
• The idea of progressive revelation is of central significance for the Bahá'í faith
• Bahá'u'lláh taught that God intervenes throughout human history at different times to reveal
more of himself through his messengers (called Divine Messengers, or Manifestations of God)
• The central idea of the faith is that of unity. They believe that people should work together for
the common benefit of humanity.
• The Bahá’í teachings stem from the Three Onenesses: The Oneness of God, The Oneness
of Mankind, and The Oneness of Religion
