Chapter 1: INFORMATION ABOUT AUTO COMPONENTS
SECTOR

1.1 HISTORY OF THE SECTOR: -

 In 1897, the first car ran on an Indian road. Through the 1930s, cars were imports only, and in small
numbers.
 An embryonic automotive industry emerged in India in the 1940s. Hindustan Motors was launched
in 1942, long-time competitor Premier in 1944, building Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat products
respectively.Mahindra & Mahindra was established by two brothers in 1945, and began assembly of
Jeep CJ-3A utility vehicles. Following independence in 1947, the Government of India and the
private sector launched efforts to create an automotive-component manufacturing industry to supply
to the automobile industry. In 1953, an import substitution programme was launched, and the import
of fully built-up cars began to be restricted.

1.2 OVERALL WORKING OF THE AUTOCOMPONENTS: -

The auto ancillary industry is the other side of the automotive industry, which deals with the manufacturing
and selling of intermediate parts, equipment and chemicals among others. The auto ancillary supply chain
members are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), tier I, tier II, tier III manufacturers and
intermediaries. OEMs deal in high-value instruments and dominate the market, while the unorganized sector
serves the aftermarket and deals in low-value products.

The rapidly globalising world is opening newer opportunities for the transportation industry, especially
while it makes a shift towards electric, electronic and hybrid cars, which are deemed more efficient, safe,

for auto-component manufacturers, who would need to adapt change via systematic R&D.

The Indian auto-components industry is set to become the third largest in the world by 2025. Indian auto-
component makers are well positioned to benefit from the globalisation of the sector as export potential

3.3 Ratios and their Interpretation

Interpretations of the ratios
1. P.E Ratio: -Price to Earnings' ratio, which indicates for every rupee of earnings how much an investor is
willing to pay for a share. A general rule of thumb is that shares trading at a low P/E are undervalued (it depends
on other factors too).

2. P.B Ratio: - Companies use the price-to-book ratio (P/B ratio) to compare a firm's market
capitalization to its book value. It's calculated by dividing the company's stock price per share by its
book value per share (BVPS).

3. Dividend Yield Ratio: - Dividend Per Share/Market Value Per Share. In the simplest form
of calculation, you can take the amount of dividend per share and divide it with the market value per
share to get the dividend yield ratio.

19
4. E.P.S Ratio: - Earnings per share or EPS is an important financial measure, which indicates the
profitability of a company. It is calculated by dividing the company's net income with its total number of
outstanding shares. ... It is considered to be a more expanded version of the basic earnings per share
ratio.

5. Sales Growth Ratio: -The sales growth rate measures the rate at which a business is able to increase
revenue from sales during a fixed period of time.

6. Return On Equity: -ROE is considered a measure of a corporation's profitability in relation to

stockholders’ equity.

7. Return On Capital Employee: -Return on capital employed (ROCE) is a financial ratio that

measures a company's profitability in terms of all of its capital.

8. Profit Growth Ratio: -To calculate revenue growth as a percentage, you subtract the previous
period's revenue from the current period's revenue, and then divide that number by the previous
period's revenue. So, if you earned $1 million in revenue last year and $2 million this year, then your
growth is 100 percent.

9. Net Profit Margin Ratio: -Net profit margin is net profit divided by revenue, times 100. It tells
you what portion of total income is profit.

10. COF Ratio: -COF Rate means the cost for each Lender of funding its pro rata share of Eurocurrency
Loan (from whatever source and using whatever methodologies as such Lender may select in its reasonable
discretion) at such times as a LIBOR Screen Rate or any local screen rate is not available for the applicable
Interest Period and the Agent cannot determine a comparable replacement

segmentation which divides consumers into sub-groups based on shared psychological characteristics,
including subconscious or conscious beliefs, motivations, and priorities to explain and predict consumer
behavior.
The traditional way to develop a psychographic segmentation model has been through a market research
study surveying a statistically representative sample of a target audience. That target audience could be
representative of the general population, a specific demographic or socioeconomic group, a population
of consumers who utilize a certain product or service category or any group of people relevant to one’s
research or business objectives.

6.7 Process used

 Mother-son Sumi Systems Ltd

50
Step 1- The automobile assembly plant represents only the final phase in the process of manufacturing an
automobile, for it is here that the components supplied by more than 4,000 outside suppliers, including
company-owned parts suppliers, are brought together for assembly, usually by truck or railroad.

Step 2-On automobile assembly lines, much of the work is now done by robots rather than humans. In the
first stages of automobile manufacture, robots weld the floor pan pieces together and assist workers in
placing components such as the suspension onto the chassis.

Step 3-The body is built up on a separate assembly line from the chassis. Robots once again perform most of
the welding on the various panels, but human workers are necessary to bolt the parts together. During
welding, component pieces are held securely in a jig while welding operations are performed.

Step 4-The body and chassis assemblies are mated near the end of the production process. Robotic arms lift
the body shell onto the chassis frame, where human workers then bolt the two together. After final
components are installed, the vehicle is driven off the assembly line to a quality checkpoint.
