SHORT MODULE DESCRIPTOR: (max 425 characters)


This module examines a range of aspects which define Hispanic and Francophone worlds,
focusing predominantly on the contemporary period. In addition, it develops a range of key skills
which will support study at undergraduate level. For those students electing a languages Minor
pathway, the module anchors linguistic competence through a deeper understanding of the
cultural referents specific to these countries.

MODULE AIMS:
To introduce students to some key aspects of Hispanic and Francophone societies via media such
as film, text, documentaries, news reports etc.: to develop an understanding and appreciation of
other cultures through academic study and personal experience of a fieldtrip: to develop a range of
skills such as referencing, effective use of sources, presentations, academic writing etc. For those
taking language as a Minor pathway, this module is designed to anchor linguistic competence
through a deeper understanding of the cultural referents specific to these countries.

ASSESSED LEARNING OUTCOMES:


At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:
1. demonstrate a more detailed knowledge and understanding of aspects of Francophone and
Hispanic history, culture and society, together with an awareness of varied ideas and
contexts
2. analyse and synthesise a range of information / ideas with minimal guidance
3. communicate effectively in English and/or the target language (Minor pathway students) by
giving a formal presentation and/or writing essays or reports in an appropriate academic
style
4. select, from a range of sources, information relating to aspects of different cultures and
societies and develop appropriate research strategies
5. acknowledge reference sources appropriately
6. through reflection derive, assess and apply knowledge gained from field work

Summary of Module Content


An overview of aspects of culture and society pertaining to the Hispanic and Francophone worlds.
These may include gastronomy, architecture, film, salient features of major capital cities etc.
The field trip represents an important component of this module and as such will influence syllabus
content.
