Lesson Idea Name: Setting Personal Reading Goals

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade / English Language Arts

Content Standard Addressed:

ELAGSE3RL2: Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the
central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

Technology Standards Addressed:

Student Standard: (Empowered Learner) 1a: Students will articulate and set personal goals, develop strategies
to leverage technology to achieve them, and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.

Educator Standard: (Analyst)7b: Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and
summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback to students and inform
instruction.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ Quizizz ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms X Flipgrid ☐ Blooket

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

X Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to this activity, we will have learned about how to determine the central message, lesson, or moral and
explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. We will have also learned about how to identify
different characters in texts, plot of stories, sequence of events in stories, and how to summarize and review
articles.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

X Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ Formative assessment of
content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment
of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll X Discussion starter X “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the Setting Personal Reading Goals activity, students will individually set a goal of reading a certain
number of texts such as online articles, books, short stories, etc. over the period of one semester. Then the
next semester, they can change their learning goal if desired. The students will track their progress and
enjoyment of each text on Flip Grid by reviewing the text they read and answering questions such as the ones
in the box below. The students will cite their text in their Flip Grid description. The teacher will review the
students’ Flip Grid submissions as they are posted depending on each students reading goals and have
monthly mini-meetings with each student about their reading progress and reviews. The teacher will set aside
class time for students to share their favorite texts with their classmates once a month. The students will
need an electronic device to record and post their Flip Grid such as a smartphone, computer, or tablet.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No

☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank X Longer open-ended response

List two questions about your topic that requires an open-ended response. These questions should prompt
critical thinking skills and offer a variety of responses that may be acceptable.

What is the main idea of the text?

How is the main idea communicated through important details in the text?

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all the questions and display
correct responses to the class after the SRT activity?

☐ Yes

X No
Why or why not?

Because the goal of this activity is for students to review their choice of text, so I am unable to make specific
answers since all/most of the students will have different texts to review. I will simply collect responses to
assess progress to adjust instruction.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

At the end of every month, students will have the option to share their favorite text with their classmates.

How will the data be used?

The data collected will be what type of text the students choose, what level of reading their chosen text is,
and if they progressively choose higher level reading materials. The teacher will use this data to adjust
instruction and track student progress. This activity will give me an insight on what level the students enjoy
reading, as well as topics they enjoy wich will give me information I can use to increase their reading level and
make instruction more engaging for the students.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal learning goal for this activity is to gain better understanding of what my students enjoy reading
and learning about. I hope that this will help me plan lessons that are more engaging and relatable to my
students.

Reflective Practice:

I think that the lesson I have created will impact student learning by making a connection to the students’
interests and reading preferences to the lessons in most/all subjects in our classroom. One way that I could
extend this activity is give the students the option to do a detailed book project such as a presentation of
their choosing such as a PowerPoint, student-made video, or any other presentation method they choose that
I approve.
