Identification of Types of Snakes on Marak Island, Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra

Abstract

Research on snake species has been carried out with the aim of identifying the types of snakes found on Marak
Island, Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra in order to obtain data on snake species diversity, discover new types of
snakes that have not been recorded on Marak Island and collect specimens. The method used in this study was a
survey with purposive sampling, night visual encounter and day visual ecounter. The specimen was taken by killing
the snake with 70% alcohol on the head, the snake was injected with 10% formalin in several parts of the body and
covered it with a tissue that had been soaked with 4% formalin then left for 1 night, then identified in the laboratory.
The results of the study were grouped based on 3 characteristics, namely menstrual characteristics, meristic
characteristics and multistate characteristics. Based on the results of research conducted on Marak Island, Pesisir
Selatan Regency, it can be concluded that there are 9 individual snakes classified into 8 species, seven generals, 5
families, with details. Namely: the family Colubridae, Typhlophidae, Viperidae, Hydrophydae and Pythobidae.
