The Halal Way

“No matter what happen, always remember that I am doing this for you, for us. Good bye Shan”. My
tears can’t stop falling, while reading the letter he gave me before he flew to L.A, and then realization
hits me… it was really over, the only person I have trusted have already left me, the love of my life,
Yazzer Khan… left me.

I was snapped back into reality by the sound of the coffee machine in front of me. Hays. I am
reminiscing the past again. It’s been ten years since that day happened, yet it feels like it was just
yesterday. I had lost contact on him. I wonder how is he now? Anyway, there’s no point of thinking
about him now.

As I walk in the hallway while sipping my favorite cappuccino coffee, towards my office and then
opened the door. I smiled as I read the words that was written in front of my table, “Atty. Shannelle
Grayson Garcia”, oh god, I am still not used to it. Who would thought? That the childish teenage girl
before will become a successful lawyer now. I thank my parents for that.

My parents… the one who forced me to stay away from him. I know that we were very young
that time, and having a boyfriend is prohibited to our religion. I understand everything now, alright, but I
couldn’t help it but to feel the pain in my chest. I disregard that thought again, and decided to finish the
remaining papers that contains the file of my clients this week and have on my way home.

As I step up in our front door before knocking the door, I had suddenly felt something strange in
me, the feeling that I cannot explain but still, I manage to greet my Salams before entering our house.

To my surprise, I was greeted by a familiar man standing in front of me, I was confused at first
but my heart suddenly beats so fast, after recognizing the face of him. It was the man I am thinking
earlier. Yazzer Khan. It feels like my whole world stops and feels like forever before he responded “Wa
Allaykumu Salam”. I don’t know what to do so I lower my gaze avoiding his. Thankfully, our parents
called us both and told us that we have something to talk about so I manage to passed him by.

“You two will be married as soon as possible”. I was completely got speechless when my father
spilled those words. I mean woaaa. I cannot process it all.

Yazzer and I are here now in our garden to talk about what’s happening. “I promised to your
parents that I will marry you when I finish studying abroad and find a stable job. So here I am, together
with my parents, asking for your parent’s permission to marry their only daughter.” He said after
explaining his side. “I’m so sorry Shan if it took me so long to come back here.” He said while caressing
my face. We were both crying because of pain and happiness.

“ I love you so much, please marry me.”

“ God has really a perfect planned for us. Perfect time to be with the only man I love in my
whole life, to be with you again my love, and in a halal way this time. Yes, Yazzer I will marry you.”
