Lesson 2 – APPLICATIONS OF DERIVATIVES AND DIFFERENTIAL

Lesson 2.1
Activity 8

1. A ladder 6 m long leans against a vertical wall. The lower end of the ladder is moved
away from the wall at the rate of 2 m/min. Find the rate of change of the area
formed by the wall, the floor and the ladder when the lower end is 4 m from the
wall.

2. Water is running out of a conical tank 3 m across the top and 4 m deep at the rate
of 2 m3/min. Find the rate at which the level of water drops when it is 1 m from the
top.

3. Sand is poured at the rate of 10 m 3/min so as to form a conical pile whose altitude is
always equal to the radius of its base. Find the rate at which the area of its base is
increasing when the radius is 5 m.
