LITERATURE’S IMPORTANCE/IMPACT

IN OUR LIVES

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary
competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts
that our lives have already become.” ~ C.S. Lewis, a British scholar and novelist

This adage may be the most accurate description of the significance of

literature in our lives. Literature reminds us of old and new stories, epics, sacred
scriptures, and classical works. It is defined as the body of written works produced by
scholars and researchers specializing in a particular language, period, or culture.

LITERATURE ADDS VALUE

Literature, as stated by C.S. Lewis, not only describes reality but also adds to it.
Literary works are depictions of societal thinking patterns and social norms. They
depict various aspects of the common man’s life. Classical literary works provide food
for thought while also encouraging imagination and creativity. Exposing oneself to good
literary works is akin to providing one with the best educational opportunities
available. On the other hand, a lack of exposure to good literature is equivalent to
denying oneself the opportunity to grow.

LITERATURE HELPS UNDERSTAND LIFE

Reading great literary and poetic works helps one understand life. They assist a
person in taking a closer look at the various aspects of living. Literature, in its various
forms, can alter one’s outlook on life in a variety of ways. Biographies of great people, as
well as true-life stories of bravery, sacrifice, and other positive values, never fail to
inspire readers. Such works provide the general public with insight into the lives of
notable people while also serving as a bible of ideals.
IT PROVIDES INFORMATION
Literature is a massive source of information. Famous inventors’ research works
and notable scientists’ literary works frequently tell the stories of their groundbreaking
discoveries and inferences. Ongoing developments in science and technology are
documented so that the rest of the world is aware of them. Several ancient scriptures
relating stories of human evolution and narratives of human life in those times have
been enormously beneficial to mankind. As a result, literature has always served as a
reliable source of information.

MY OWN SYNOPSIS OF LITERATURE’S IMPACT IN OUR LIVES

Literature is significant because of the breadth of knowledge it imparts, the

moral values it conveys, and the enjoyment it provides. Exposure to good literary works
is necessary at all stages of life because it enriches us in more ways than one. Literature
is unquestionably more than its literary definition, which defines it as “an acquaintance
with letters.” In fact, it serves as the foundation for a happy life. It gives ‘life’ to ‘living.’

Literature is something infinite, far-fetched, beyond the comprehension of many

minds, and extraordinary. Literature teaches us to see life from a different perspective,
gives us a reason to think in a different way and better understand our surroundings,
where our thoughts are not confined to four walls but where our thoughts fly to create
beautiful art through imagination. Imagination knows no bounds; we have the freedom
to express ourselves through our colorful and artistic minds.

I’d like to quote a famous quote from the film Dead Poets Society: “medicine, law,
business, engineering, are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life, but poetry,
beauty, romance, love are what we stay alive for.”

And it is believed that words and ideas change the world, so I believe literature
contains infinite depth of words and gives birth to innumerable ideas to change the
world, so I believe literature is as important as our life on Earth.
