INTRODUCTION
MATERIALS AND METHOD

The materials used in determining the melting point is as follows:

Powder Naphthalene (C10H8) is the main specimen in the experiment. To determine its
melting point.

Capillary tube, the other end of capillary tube is sealed by heating in a Bunsen burner.

Thermometer, is attached to the sealed capillary tube containing powder Naphthalene.

Liquid Paraffin is the second specimen used in this experiment determining its melting
point. The capillary tube is half drowned inside the beaker containing liquid paraffin.

Other materials also used in the experiment, 250ml Beaker, Bunsen Burner, Iron stand
with clamp, wire gauze, tripod stand, porous plate, spatula, and thread.

Procedure:

1. Gather all materials that are needed in the experiment

2. Seal the one end of the capillary tube using the heat from Bunsen burner
3. Put the powder naphthalene on the porous plate
4. Insert the powder naphthalene about 2-3mm of capillary tube.
5. Attach the thermometer at the capillary tube using thread
6. Pour the liquid paraffin about half of the beaker
7. Clamp the thermometer into the iron stand with clamp
8. Drown the half of thermometer into the beaker containing liquid paraffin
9. Lit the Bunsen burner and start heating the beaker containing liquid paraffin
10. Stir the liquid paraffin in order the temperature is evenly distributed
11. Record the initial temperature when the powder naphthalene starts melting
12. Record the final temperature when the powder naphthalene is completely
melted.

Table 1 shows the result of the experiment on determining the melting point of
Naphthalene using the average of the temperature before( T 1 ) and after ( T2 ) its melting
process. The temperature was recorded on the table above wherein T 1 is 78℃ and T2 IS
82℃The percent error of the exact and calculated value of the melting point of
Naphthalene was also determined on the table above which is equal to 0.32%.

Fig. 1 shows the solution on determining the melting point. T 1 and T2 were added
and the sum was divided by 2 to get its average which is the calculated melting point of
Naphthalene.Fig. 2 shows the solution on determining the percent error of the exact and
calculated value of the melting point of Naphthalene.
