HISTORY OF LPU- BATANGAS

• Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas(formerly Lyceum of Batangas) is a tertiary


educational institution established in 1966.

• Recognized University in the Pacific Region.

• The institution established out of the great desire of Senator Sotero H. Laurel and 3 prominent
women of Batangas namely Miss Belen Castillo, Miss Criselda Castillo and Miss Pascua
Tolentino.

• LPU stands as a legacy of Dr. Jose P. Laurel

• LPU inaugurated on July 10, 1966

• Was born on March 9, 1891 in the town of Tanauan, Batangas.

• Died November 6, 1959.

• Was the president of the Second Philippine Republic.

• Laurel has been recognized as a legitimate president of the Philippines.

• Sotero Laurel, Sr. - father

• Jacoba Garcia- mother

His father had been an official in the revolutionary government of Emilio Aguinaldo and a
signatory to the 1989 Malolos Constitution.

• He received his law degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1915, where
he studied under Dean George A. Malcolm.

• He obtained a Master of Laws degree from University of Sto. Tomas in 1919.

• He obtained a Doctorate of Law from Yale Law School.

• Laurel began his life in public service while student.

• Messenger in the Bureau of Forestry


• Clerk in the Code Committee, he was introduced to its head, Thomas A. Street.

• Laurel was appointed first as Undersecretary of the Interior Department, then promoted as
Secretary of the Interior in 1922.

PERSONAL LIFE

• He married Pacencia Hidalgo in 1911.

Assembly from Batangas from 1943 to 1944

Congressman from Batangas Third District from 1941 to 1957 and from 1961 to 1972

Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines from 1954 to 1957 and from 1967 to
1971

2. Jose Laurel III (Aug. 27, 1914- March 11, 1998)- Ambassador to Japan.
3. Natividad Laurel (born December 25, 1916)

4. Sotero Laurel II (September 27, 1918- September 16, 2009)- Senator of the Philippines from
1987 to 1992 became Senate President.

5. Mariano Antonio Laurel ( Jan. 17, 1922- Aug. 2, 1979)

• Senator of the Philippines from 1967 to 1972, Prime Minister of the Philippines from February
25 to March 25, 1986,

• Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines from March 25, 1986 to February 2, 1987

• Vice President of the Philippines from February 25, 1986 to June 30, 1992

Presidential candidate of the Nacionalista Party in the Philippine presidential election of 1992
placed seventh in the presidential race against Fidel V. Ramos

• Greatest son of Batangas and former President of the Republic of the Philippines.

LPU stands as a legacy of JPL and has been known for its high standards in the field of business
and humanities, law and foreign service

• Amador Lualhati- (Education 1960) was designated as Secondary School Principal

Amelia de la Cruz and Emmanuela Gutierrez, who were both Education graduates in 1964 and
1965.

Initial offerings were the Secondary Course and Collegiate Liberal Arts and Commerse courses.

Total enrolment of 800 students (2016)

(2017)- 10,000 students enrolled, 376 faculty members supported by 272 administrative
personnel.

• The university Buildings- SHL, JPL, LEVISTE, MABINI, MALVAR.

• LIMA Campus is home to Maritime and Engineering students. It has an International Dormitory,
a swimming pool and a world class Maritime facilities.

• A sports arena built in the honor of Arsenio “Dodjie” Laurel has more than 2500 seating capacity
and a biggest gymnasium in Batangas Province.

SENATOR OF THE PHILIPPINES

• 1925 Laurel was elected to the Philippine Senate.

• He served for one term before losing his re- election bid in 1931 to Claro M. Recto.

• Haled as one of the “Seven Wise Men of the Convention”, he would sponsor the provisions on
the Bill of Rights.

• February 29, 1936-Laurel was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court

ACCESSION

• One of the many propaganda slogan made during the Laurel administration “One Banner, One
Nation, One Language”.

• 1943- he was shot by Philippine guerillas while playing golf at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club,
he quickly survived.
