INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC:

Writing essays is a task that you will surely do as a student. And there is a tool that you may use to accomplish your
writing tasks easier and faster. This is what this episode is all about. We will be talking about what outlining is and how to
construct an outline.

WHAT IS AN OUTLINE?
An outline is a general plan of what you are going to write. It is a tool used to generate ideas, to organize them from
general to specific, and to highlight the relationships among them.
Outlining maintains logical and coherent sentences. But more than that, it has other purposes that will surely benefit you!
First, it saves time in preparation. Second, it maintains focus on the main topic. Third, it identifies boundaries. And fourth,
it helps readers understand the ideas easier.

PARTS OF AN OUTLINE
How then should you make an outline? Understanding its parts will really be helpful.
The first part is the TITLE. It tells what the whole essay is about. Write it with all letters capitalized. But make sure that
it’s not a sentence nor a question, just a group of words.
The second part are the MAIN TOPICS. They are numbered with Roman Numerals. Each main topic represents the
biggest idea of the paragraph.
Third are the SUBTOPICS. They are indented and numbered with capital letters. The capital letters of a subtopic should
fall just below the first letter of the first word of the main topic. Subtopics give the specific details of the main ideas.
There are times when more specific and most specific supporting details are also included. They are numbered with hindu
arabic numbers and small letters prospectively.

STRUCTURE OF AN OUTLINE
To get a clear review of the parts. Here is the structure of an outline that shows the correct format. (Insert example)
The structure starts with a title that is seen at the topmost center part of the outline. The ideas are presented and arranged
from general down to the most specific. Notice how the indention of each line gets longer as the ideas get more specific.
Make sure that the letter of the first word of every line falls under the first letter of the idea above it.

TYPES OF OUTLINE
There are two kind of outline. One is called topic outline, and the other one is called sentence outline.
In a topic outline, headings are presented in a single word or short phrases. Here is an example. (Insert example) Notice
the following features: First, all lines are phrases not sentences. Second the first letter of the first word in each line is
capitalized, including proper nouns. Third, no end marks is used.
In sentence outline, on the other hand, all the headings are expressed in complete sentences. Using the same details from
the outline that I showed earlier, here is the sentence outline version of it. (Insert example) Notice the following feature:
First, all lines are sentences. Second, the first letter of the first word in each line is capitalized, including proper nouns.
Third, end marks are used.
Reminder; Be consistent. Do not mixed up two types of outlines. Use either complete sentences or brief phrases, but not
both.

CONCLUSION:
Flash on screen: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6
Sasabihin: Clearly outline your plans, acknowledge God and he will direct them for you.
