Context
AGARWAL Savit Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

This scene occurs after Art releases the first part of the graphic novel where he’s
getting multiple offers for movies and books. Art is troubled, as he doesn’t want to
commercialize his fathers suffering, although he realises that his new found fame
was built over the graves of millions of dead.

In this scene, we see Art writing the scene itself, a human wearing a mouse mask,
displaying how Art had to put himself into the shoes of a jew in Poland.

This scene is important because it describes Art’s conflict of using the suffering of
millions of people for commercial gain despite not wanting to and gives largely
important context to the story since the sequence of the story is unstructured.
Purpose
AGARWAL Savit Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

The purpose of this page was to give context to the story as an introduction to the
chapter due to the sequence of the story being a fractured narrative.

The author did this by creating context to the date of it being after Vladek died and
the author’s situation with deciding whether to produces movies and books for the
first part of the story.
Audience
AGARWAL Savit Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

The audience of this scene was to writers and movie makers who face similar
problems through their daily lives as a result of successful stories conveyed in
writing or in audio-visual form.

It was also to those people who had to decide whether to use a negative memory
such as the deaths of the people in Auschwitz for their own purposes, as seen by
the number of bodies piled around Art describing his dilemma.
Structure
AGARWAL Savit Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

- First Person Narration

- Sort of a summary of the publication and reception of maus, but disjointed
when compared to the rest of the novel
- Structured directly towards the audience as we see him writing this scene
which is like the use of direct address
Technique
AGARWAL Savit Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

Many techniques were utilised to great effect. For example:

Metaphor- Art is sitting on a pile of dead mice

Symbolism- Art wears a mouse mask
Panel Sizing- the last panel is large, and draws a readers eyes towards it

Telling a story:
NOVEL: Maus
By: Aryan, Mandar and Prithish
Context
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

- The scene starts with Vladek telling Artie about the possible ways his friend
Mandelbaum could have been killed.

- Although, Vladek wasn't certain, he described 3 possible ways Mandelbaum could have
been killed.

- This scene also shows how the jewish prisoners were treated like in Auschwitz. The
Nazis really didn't value the prisoner’s lives, they would falsely accuse them and find an
excuse to kill them.

A
Important observations
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

- The most common way Mandelbaum could have been killed is pictorially
represented whereases Vladek mentions the other 2 possible ways in a
conversation with Artie.

- The 1st possibility seems like the most emotionally hurtful way Mandelbaum could
have been murdered. The smiling expression on the guard's face may cause the
audience to despise the Nazis soldiers even more.

A
PASIT-Purpose of the scene
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

The main purpose of this scene is to shed light on the treacherous and unjust ways the
Nazis would treat the Jews. People in prison would be falsely accused of something
they haven’t done resulting the Nazis to find excuses to kill them.
The line “Maybe they kicked and hit him in his head because he couldn't work fast
enough” indicate the Nazis treating the Jews like slaves and not thinking twice about
ending their lives.

A
PASIT- Audience reaction, message
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

➔ Bullies
➔ Brutal

P
PASIT-Structure (Technique and Impact)
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

The use of ‘Visual Imagery’ is evident from the following graphics:

- The smiling expression on the guard’s face while he tosses out Mandelbaum’s
hat.
- Next to Mandelbaum’s body the guard notes down the reason for the encounter
and smiles once again.

The guards finding joy in their wrongful deeds show the evil, dark and unjust side of
the Nazis.

A
PASIT- Ideas of scene and why it is important
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

This scene is absolutely crucial to the flow of the book as it describes in great detail
some of the actions that took place in the prison in Auschwitz. The scene is yet
another brutal example of the treachery within the prisons of Auschwitz as we see one
of Vladek’s friends get framed into being shot by a guard.

M
Overall effect on readers
GUHA Aryan Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 15Sep21 16:00

Sorrow - One of the main purpose of this scene is to make the audience feel bad about
the Jews prisoners.

Anger and Hatred - The audience’s hatred towards the Nazis soldiers may have gotten
stronger with this scene.
