In the picture, I see a strictly controlled society as evidenced by the large police tank,
security cameras, the “B Class Citizens only” restrictions and the curfew. The purpose of the
text is to illustrate how societies would look like if completely controlled and possibly did at
the time of creation, and possibly even to inform that society is like this even today.

This image strongly suggests Politics, Power and Justice to me as politics must be a key
factor in order for society to become like this, as seen in the sarcastic/ironic statement “we
don’t have to worry about anarchy anymore”, implying that anarchy is not possible due to
the stronghold of authorities over society. It also shows the power the police and
authorities have over other citizens and the citizen classes goes to show which citizens are
favoured in comparison to others. The tight security is an indication of possibly the lack of
justice faced to citizens in case the rules set by authorities are broken.

This has strong links to Maus as the people are classed in terms of status and numbered as
well, which is what happened in Auschwitz where the people considered important are
benefited and others aren’t. The police tank is similar to the Nazi guards who shot anyone
who broke the rules and controlled everyone else.

A sort of an assembly line in a factory can be seen in the cartoon. It is an endless circle of
prison and poverty, showing that one results in the other. The main purpose is to show that
people in poverty are sometimes forced to steal or are often blamed for crimes for which they go
to prison, but on their release are faced with the same poverty that put them in prison in the first
place.

This connects to the global issue of politics, power and justice. This is because it is the duty of
the government to ensure that poverty is eliminated to the best possible degree, which would
ultimately result in less crime, since the poor would not have to resort to stealing. They may also
not be able to afford bail or even a good lawyer who might help justify their actions. The people
in power may not be putting the taxpayer’s money to good use, and may be using it for personal
gain. Thus, if wealth is not distributed equally, poverty arises, which may result in people forced
to commit crime to survive.

In Maus, we can see that Vladek’s father-in-law is a rich man, and hence can get them out of
many tight situations. Bribing is also an essential part of the graphic novel, since Vladek often
had to pay heavy sums of money to get himself and Anja out of trying situations, an example
being when they fled to Hungary. But ultimately, Vladek’s father-in-law’s wealth doesn’t help him
get out the concentration camp, since the person he had trusted it with betrays him in the last
minute.

Description and Purpose

In this image we can see a dominant image of a shadow of a jet ying by. We see 2 men who are
Vietnamese looking at the plane and saying "They're having problems with their economies again".
The purpose of the text is educate the readers about the devastation of the Vietnam War and its
repercussions.

Global Issue
Politics, Power and Justice
The image is inferring to the con icts of the Vietnam war (which ended in 1975). We see 5 craters
which have formed due to the bombs the con ict has brought upon. We also see that the two men
just stare at the plane in amazement. They are seen very tiny compared to the plane which shows
their lack of power to stop this war .

Link To Maus
Maus is a graphic novel about the con icts of World War 2. Likewise, this image is addressing the
after effects of the Vietnam war. The graphic novel is about the common man not having any power
to stop the ghts and all they can do is try to save themselves by hiding. Similarly, in this image we
see a man looking up to the plane/jet as if they do not have power against them.

Cartoon three “we don't have to worry about anarchy anymore”

This cartoon displays the discussion of two civilians in an implied authoritarian state, this aspect
being exemplified by the abundance of surveillance devices and regulations present in the
surroundings. The message Cobb is attempting to exemplify through this cartoon is the danger
of overwhelming government control, and the detriments it could have for human
society.Furthermore, through the line of the figure “At least we don’t have to worry about
anarchy anymore”, Cobb is visualising the disregard of the general population for this alarming
gradual increase in control.

What we see?

✓ The change in civilization over the years.

✓ Development in civilization (people are now using automobiles as their source of
transportation instead of bullock carts and walking).
✓ Factories/ industries/ buildings have replaced castles and old buildings.
✓ Development in factories and architectures are also sort of polluting the environment.

Purpose

I believe the text is demonstrating to us, the development in human civilization also does lead to the
environment getting polluted.

Global Issue

Science, technology and the environment

JAIN Siya Vipul Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 06Oct21 14:30

Description
The cartoon is divided into two parts. The first part showing an olden architectural building
(palace-like) with a landscape full of grass, trees, a clear sky and a group of farmers (using
animals as their transportation). The second part of the cartoon shows multiple modern
buildings standing very close to each other, with a factory in the background releasing pollutants
in the air(the grey smoke) and cars jammed on the main road.

Intention
I think the intention of this graphic is to display the impact of urbanisation on humanity as well as
the natural environment. It focuses on the negative effect it has on earth through examples such
as a polluted sky, overcrowding of vehicles and lack of historical value(due to the modern
buildings taking place of the old structures). It two parts also juxtaposed each other, as in the
first half, the clear clouds are present over the building and the dark clouds are placed over the
trees as a way of showing rainfall. However, in the second half, the clear clouds are over the
JAIN Siya Vipul Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 06Oct21 14:30

tress, while the grey clouds are over the building symbolising smoke coming out of a factory.
This is related to the concept of climatic changes and global warming.

Global issue
I think this cartoon relates to the global issue of “Science, technology and the environment”.
There is a clear relationship between the impact of urbanisation on the natural environment
causing complications such as global warming. It also refers to the advancement created by
humans such as vehicles, factories etc which again overpopulated an area and causes more
environmental impacts.

Link to Maus
The first half of the cartoon shows the environment in which the people used or living during the
Holocaust. During the concentration camps, people were forced to move materials from one
place to another which required a lot of manpower. The only for the Jews to carry things was on
their back which is very similar to the person shown in the first half of the comic. In this case, it
shows how lack of development caused the Jews to work harder and many livers were taken
due to the overworking and lack of power. On the other hand, it also shows how advancements
such as the gas chambers were only possible due to human discoveries and advancements.
This sort of technology was disruptive to humankind , taking many lives during the holocaust.

In this cartoon, we see an illustration of a skeleton( which represents man) and a frog( which I
believe refers to all animals). The purpose of this cartoon is to shed light on how humans
believe that they are superior to or better than all other animal species but what the humans are
actually doing is pushing the self-destruct button as we see in the image, a human blowing up
his/her own skull. This links to science, technology and environment as it suggests the
advances in science and technology have damaged the environment which in turn will hurt
humans in the long run.

MAN DEMONSTRATING HIS SUPERIORITY OVER ANIMALS

It’s a cartoon of a skeleton looking at a frog, with its head exploding, looking like a mushroom
cloud from an atomic bong, with him pressing the button for the weapon. This is done with the
text “MAN demonstrating his superiority over animals.” The purpose of this text is to show how
foolish the idea of man being superior to animals is due to the idiocy of the man’s behaviour.

I think it best fits Science, Technology, and the Environment, as it shows how man attempts to
show their superiority to the environment (animals) through their use of technology (the nuke)

This fits maus due to how the Germans in maus act so violently and brutally to differentiate
themselves from the others, in that case the Jews or Poles, but they don’t show their superiority
instead showing their violent nature.

TOUGHER GUN LAWS

RON COBB

IB S1- Language & Literature

ANALYSIS

By: Manya Kumar

This cartoon was published in the newspapers in 1968. Later in the

year, in the month of October, the gun laws were actually changed
and improved; there were a lot more prohibitions. But before that, in
America, there were multiple protests. During those protests, many
people, who wanted the gun laws to change were killed by those who
did not.
KUMAR Manya Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 06Oct21 14:30

ANALYSIS
Ron Cobb was an American-Australian artist. As well as being an
editorial cartoonist he worked on numerous major films including
Dark Star, Star Wars, Alien, Raiders of the Lost Ark etc.

1. WHAT CAN BE SEEN...

- A man was trying to protest against gun laws (which may have been unsafe)
- This is shown by the poster which is taped to the table.
- He was killed by getting shot in the chest.
- There are 6 bullet holes in total (2 of them into his chest).
- His blood had drained and stained the floor. It can be inferred that it has been
hours since the shooting, and nobody has taken his body to the hospital.

2. PURPOSE OF CARTOON
The purpose of the petition was to bring change for the
betterment of the society. Yet, people killed him with the very
things he was against (guns). This shows how people in power
use unfair tactics to oppress those, who go against their desires.

3. LINK TO GLOBAL ISSUE OF:

Politics, Power and Justice

4. WHY?
Politics: the man was filling a petition to convince the government to
change gun laws. It can be inferred that the gun laws in place were
unsafe and unfair.

Power: People who shot the man, abused their power and advantage.

Justice: It was unfair that a man who was trying to change the society
for good was brutally killed by people who misused their power.

5. LINK TO MAUS
Oppression of people who try to speak up and change unfair
laws and acts, by death penalty.

In MAUS, Jews who tried to speak up or act against the Nazis

were killed mercilessly, without second thought.

Chosen Images:
First image chosen:

In this image I see 2 unnamed people talking to each

other regarding the police patrolling in tanks and the
one on the right is explaining to the person on the
left that this is being done in order to restrict and
stop any kind of anarchy. I believe the purpose of
this text is to alert us about a possible future that we
might live in where everyone is stripped of their
identities and are given serial numbers as identities.
This relates to Politics, power and justice, as this
image shows the power the political leaders and
government bodies have on it's countries citizens.
It does have a link to maus as similar to the
rats(Jews) the citizens are segregated into three
different categories citizen A,B and C and they are also stripped away of their identity and given serial
numbers as names just like the jews were in the concentration camps and similar to the Nazis, the police
in this image keep close and strict surveillance on the citizens in order to make sure they do not
misbehave or cause issues.

Second image chosen:

In this image I see 2 astronauts cleaning up garbage/trash on

a different planet. I believe that the purpose of this text is to
warn us regarding our excess production of waste and excess
usage of plastic and non-biodegradable material as this
trash/garbage managed to migrate to froeign planets and
littering them too increasing our carbon footprint on a
cosmic scale. This image relates to the global issue Science,
technology and the environment as,the improvements in
science and technology have allowed the human race to
travel and unravel vast extents of our galaxy that are
unknown at the moment, although there has been a great
progress in science and technology, humans still continue
pollute every environment and biome we live in through the
excess usage of plastic and other non-biodegradable
material. This image has no relation to the graphic novel Maus.

This cartoon shows 2 panels, containing one word ‘Technology’ in lock

caps. Both of them show a larger gure holding on to a smaller
one, representing their power. I believe the purpose is to
demonstrate how technology is a weapon that has control over
humans in the same way we used to have control over weapons in
the past.

I think it relates to science technology and the environment, as the text

shows how development of technology has impacted and become a
danger in our environment.

Yes, there is link to Maus. In Maus, the Nazis used lots of weapons to
control and torture the jews. Through the use of guns, gas
chambers, etc, they were able to create fear within the communities
which gave them power and authority over the jews.

2 In 3 sentences only, describe a) what you see and b) what you believe is the purpose of
the text
On the top of the page, I see a monkey attempting to use tools, on the bottom of the page, I see
a robot using a human. The purpose of the text is to show how although we initially created and
used tools but due to developments in technology, it is almost as if technology is using us.

3 Say which Global Issue the text suggests to you, and why.
Science, technology and the environment. This is because it shows although science and
technology are consistently developing, over-development can lead humanity into a state where
artificial intelligence takes over and controls us. It also suggests the disastrous environmental
impacts this can have on our planet.

4 Is there any link here to “Maus?” If so, what?

In many ways the rapid development of dangerous technology links to Maus. After all, it was
new technologies that fed the war, for example, the scientific development is what led to the
creation of Zyklon-B, the gas used in the gas chambers that was used to torture and kill Jews.
NAIR Malavika Grade 11 IBS1 English A Language and Literature 04 Due Date: 06Oct21 14:30

1.

2.

1. The text is a cartoon of a skeleton pressing a button that

causes his brain to explode. The explosion is in the shape of a
mushroom cloud, the skeleton is wearing a suit and he is
standing in front of a frog.

2. I believe the meaning of this cartoon is to show how man

destroys itself while trying to show off its power. Like when the
US bombed Japan in WW2, humanity is only harming itself
while demonstrating its superiority over other humans (humans
are animals too). I believe the frog does not symbolise
“animals” but humans with less power.

3. Politics, Power and Justice: The text shows mankind’s harmful

obsession with showing off its power.

4. The link to Maus: Some nazi officers in the novel could be seen as
“sadistic” the reason they behaved this way might have been
because they believed in Hitler’s message but it might also have
been their thirst for power. The reason they treater Jews so badly
might have been to raise themselves up. This ended up destroying
them because when the world came to know about the unfair
treatment of Jews, Germany lost the war to the Allies.

Description and Purpose:

In this cartoon, we see an activist who has been shot for demanding tougher gun laws by the
US government and collecting signatures from the public on a petition to gather support for the
cause. The purpose of the cartoon is to criticise and present the ironic situation of fear and
muscle power exercised by the gun rights groups like NRA. We also notice that it exposes that
one cannot fight for their rights and safety.

Global Issue: The cartoon relates to the field of inquiry - power, politics and justice. This
cartoon suggests the global issue of human rights and peace. More specifically, the text
highlights the global issue limits of justice and law that leads to gun violence and unsafe
atmosphere for the citizens.

Reason: I think the public do have the right to fight for the laws that protect themselves but the
atmosphere has limitations to do as this activist is killed for fighting against gun culture.

Links to Maus: Both Cobbs cartoons and Maus have similarities in the style of cartooning in
choosing thin line choices and black and white colour. Both also use a lot of detail in illustrations
to read the issues present, which are also similar like limits of justice, law and violence against
those who fight for their rights. Jews in the graphic novel and the activist in the cartoon fight for
their rights but both are brutally killed which suggests lack of human rights and safety.

It shows people of various races and then comments on how to onlookers they would all look the same.
