EXPERIMENT 3

Materials Reagents
 Balance  Distilled Water
 Graduated Cylinder
 3 pieces 1 peso coin (same generation
coins)

PROCEDURE

A. Mass Balance Calibration

Before the actual calibration

Prepare 3 pieces 1 peso coin

of the same generation

Clean with detergent water,

rinse, then dry.

Search on BSP data the

coin’s supposed mass
During the actual procedure

Place the coin on the

balance

Record the mass of the coin

Calculate the average mass

of each coin by measuring it
three times

Based on the
measurements, calculate the
standard deviation.
B. Graduated cylinder calibration

Before the actual calibration

Prepare the bottle of

distilled water in room
temperature

Take note of the Erlenmeyer

flask’s initial weight (Wi)

Prepare the graduated

cylinder
During the actual procedure

Fill the graduated cylinder

(grad cyl) up to 5.0 mL with
distilled water

Measure the initial volume

(V)

Fill the E-Flask with all of the

water from the grad cyl

Measure the weight of the

flask

Repeat until 3 trials for the

current volume reading are
made
Repeat until 3 trials for the
current volume reading are
made
*Weight of the flask at the end of the trial should be the new
trial’s weight

Repeat steps for 15 mL and

25.0 mL nominal volumes

Find the theoretical water

temperature at the recorded
ambiant temperature

For each mass

measurement, solve for
CorrVol using this equation
Subtract NomVol from
CorrVol to get the volume
correction, V, for each trial

Plot AveV vs NomVol (y vs x)

and connect using segments

Get the line equation for

each segment (0-5, 5-15, 15-
25)
