Water Cut Measurement
Centrifuge Test (BS&W)based on 3
API Ch. 10 (1)
Take liquid sample from test separator or wellhead. For heavy oil, heat sample in a bath
to enable to be put in a test tube. Take a minimum of 1 L sample.
Shake sample well to make sure the sample is representative of all the fluid.
Fill two 100 ml centrifuge tubes with the sample. Add a small amout of demulsifier and
shake again. If escaping gas has left the level below 50% or 100% level, top it off again.
Take warm solvent, preferably Varsol, or can be Toluene/Xylene, and fill the centrifuge
tubes to 100%
Put tubes back into the heater and let the samples heat for a period of time. If the sample
is warm enough, more heating may not be required. Applied heat does not exceed the
vapor temperature of the oil and water
Centrifuge Test (BS&W)based on 4
API Ch. 10 (2)
Place sample tubes and centrifuge for 10 minutes (adjust it until it is sufficient to drop
out all BS&W)
Obtain readings of combined basic sediment and water directly in percentage from the
tube to the nearest 0.05 ml (from 0.1 to 1 ml) and to the nearest 0.1 ml (above 1 ml
graduation)
Read the BS&W measurement directly from the 0% to 200% calibrated tubes. Doubles
the reading to determine the BS&W content of the oil from 0% to 100% calibrated tubes
Average the results from the two different tubes. Record the percentage of sediment,
solvent used, type and amount of demulsifier (if used) and temperature
Calculate the total volume of oil produced in one day by multiplying the total fluid
produced reading by the percentage of BS&W contained in the centrifuge
