1 Functional specification
The MC3-WHR-C is a controller for heating water using waste heat from up to three generators

An MC3-WHR-C can use up to 3 generators for heating water. Each generator is handled
separately. When the generator is warm enough (by timing the run-time after start-up) a valve is
switched from closed to open.

The delay between the time the generator starts and the valve opens can be configured in the
parameters just as an optional delay in switching the valve from closed to open and vice versa.

The system also has an intervention input. Using this input the valve control can be bypassed.
Using a parameter setting the system can be configured to either close all valves or open all valves
when the input is closed.

All settings can only be changed when the correct password has been entered. The system used
two user levels. The first allows the user to view the parameter settings, and the second allows
alteration.

2 Control
The touch panel is used to read-out the control values and input settings. All measurements and
states are shown using values and icons.

2.1 General
This manual describes the control methods of the MC3-WHR-C unit. The unit is controlled using a
touch-panel. Screenshots are used to show the different possibilities.

2.2 Screen layout

2.2.1 Overview screen
Below an example of the overview screen is shown. This screen shows an overview of each of the
generators and the valvesconnrected to the MC3-WHR-C. For each generator and valve a row is
displayd with the measured temperatures and the status.

In the middle of the top-screen, the text “WHR1” is displayed in blue. This text can be altered using
the webpage. This way the controller can be made unique in a location where multiple MC3-WHR-
C’s are installed

At the right top the on/off state of the controller is shown. When the controller is switched off as
shown in the image, all valves are kept closed despite the generator state.

At the left the measured Supply and Return manifold temperatures are shown.

MC3-WHR-C Manual Documentnr.:150379 version 1.0

The main part of the screen shows the generator and valve information.
The generator state is shown using an icon and can have one of the following states:

The generator is not running

The generator is running

On the right of the generator state, the measure input and output water temperatures are shown.

The icon show on the right displays the state of the valve. This state is also shown using an icon
and can have one of the following state:

The valve is closed

The valve is open

When the icons are both display alternatively, the valve will
open when the “open valve x delay” has expired. The
remaining delay value (in seconds) is displayed next to the
icon.

When the intervention input is closed, this will be indicated on the display using the text
“Intervention active” which will be flashing.

2.2.2 Lock symbol

The lock symbol shows whether a user is logged on or not. If the lock is black and closed no user is
logged on and no changes can be made. When you press the lock symbol a numeric keyboard will
pop-up and you can enter an access code.

There are two levels of access. The first level is the lowest and can only be used to switch the
controller on and off. This mode is indicated by an open green lock. When you enter the master
code a blue open lock will appear and all changeable settings can be modified. A user log on is also
required to acknowledge any alarms. When you press an open colored lock the lock will close. After
fifteen minutes of inactivity the lock will automatically close.

2.3 Stand-by mode

The first time power is applied to the unit the unit will be in stand-by mode. In this mode, all valves
are kept closed despite the generator state.

2.4 Switch the controller on and off

If the controller is locked press the lock to enter the unlock code. when the correct code is entered
an open lock will be shown. Next press the on/off symbol on the right top of the screen. When the
controller is switched off, it will switch on. When the controller is switched on, it will display a
display asking the user if the controller should be switched off.

If the controller should be switched off, keep the OK-button (on the right) pressed for at least 5
seconds. A progress bar will show right above the buttons. If the button then is released, the
controller will switch off.

2.5 Notifications
Whenever an error occurs a flashing red exclamation mark will be shown on the top of the screen
as shown in the figure below.

By pressing the exclamation mark the active error list is shown. The list consists of the date and
time the error was reported, a short error code and a longer description of the error. When the error
is solved and acknowledged by the user the error will disappear from the list.

Even when no active error is available you can press on the spot to the left of the H&H logo to
display the list. You can use this to access the error history of the controller (button on the bottom
left). Every error that occurred is listed here and cannot be removed.

4 Hardware configuration
The hardware configuration is defined using settings on a web page. To view the web page the
computer has to be connected with an Ethernet cable to the touch panel or network switch. Use a
web browser to connect to the MC3-WHR-C by entering http://<ip.address>/config in the address
bar of the browser. The default address of the controller is 192.168.250.71.

Now I/O channels can be assigned to the various functions. I/O channels are defined by the position
of the PCB within the controller and the number of the channel on that PCB. The ordering of the
PCB’s is as is shown in the next picture:

Left Middle Right

1 3 5
uP 2 4

The I/O channels are numbered from left to right first the top and then the bottom. When several
different kinds of channels are available on a single PCB each kind starts with number 1. The pick
list only contains channels actually available on the board.

After making changes the changes have to be submitted to the controller by pressing the submit
button. When all changes are completed the controller has to be reset to activate the changes. This
is done by pressing the Restart the application button in the Other section.

All access to these pages are password protected to avoid accidental changes.

Using the Config overview button you can see all assigned channels, available channels and
configuration errors (conflicts are shown in red). Each board is identified by a serial number and its
position within the controller

The hardware Config overview shows all available PCB, defined functionality an internal networking
address. Erroneous settings can cause the controller to malfunction. Use with caution. All factory
made settings are correct and should not be changed unless explicitly told to do so.

4.2 Defining Modbus access to the controller

To define who can access what on the controller the administrative user/password combination
has to be entered after pressing the Modbus button.

The default settings are that the VASP server and the controlling touch panel have full access to
the system.

For each ip address the level of access is defined; as is the number of sub nodes that can be
queried. The priority is used to define how many messages per minute are allowed. When a client
exceeds this amount replies are delayed until the level returns to the desired level. Short bursts of
higher throughput are allowed. Using the Modbus profiles page different levels of access can be
defined. This is left to be described in a different manual.

4.3 The other section

In the other section users are allowed to create backups of all settings and software. The backup
are stored on the controller itself. Using the restore function a previously known set of good
parameters can be reactivated.

The browser can also be used to download the backups and archive them in a safe place. Restoring
the backups can be done to the original controller as well as a different one to copy the settings.
Use this last option with care as faulty settings can lead to disastrous events.

The final option in this section is restart application. This option should always be used to activate
changed settings.

4.4 Service section

In the service section the password can be changed and the time and time zone can be configured.

4.5 Test section

In the test section the panel test can be started. In the panel test each input can be checked
individually and each output can also be driven. When the test is started normal control ceases to
operate and the application has to be restarted to resume.

5 Alarms
The following alarms can be displayed in the touch screen:
