Introduction
The equipment presented within the AV-15 ARINC 429 Systems Trainer allows for
students to experience how data busses are used for communication between
aircraft devices. The trainer connects aircraft equipment such as the Firewall Shut-
Off Valve, Rotating Beacon, Outside Air Temperature Probe, and Cargo Door; all of
which are connected to a Main Computer and manipulated using a Control Panel.
The students may learn the importance of the data buss communication to the
systems by creating “faults” that highlight ARINC 429’s relevance to each.

Section I : Theory
A typical 429 digital data bus is a pair of 24-gauge copper wires. Each insulated pair
is twisted together to minimize inductive problems. The wires are wrapped in a foil
sheath that is also wrapped with a drain wire. The drain wire is then ground ed at
each end of the data bus. It is important to understand that a data bus refers to the
wiring that transmits the information between two or more line replaceable units
(LRU), not the internal wiring of the LRUs. The data bus is independent of the power
supply to each component in the AV-15. So each unit has two sets of wires, one is
the data bus and the other the power supply. The ARINC 429 data bus is
unidirectional meaning that information only flows from the transmitter to the
receiver. There can only be one transmitter, however there can be up to twenty
receivers, in the system. The main computer on the AV-15 will poll, or interrogate,
the various components on the trainer. For example: the rotating beacon has two
polling features, a send (ON) and a receive (OFF)

Page |3
a) Rotating Beacon
The rotating beacon is a stan dard red anti-collision
beacon, driven by an electric motor. A switch on the
panelturns the beacon on and off. The transmit/receive
(TX/REC) light on the control panel, above the switch,
displays the polling status between the computer and the
beacon to indicate the current status of the beacon,
either on or off. An anti-collision light usually consists of
one or two rotating lights operated by an electric motor.
The light may be fixed, by mounting under rotating
mirrors inside a protruding red glass housing. The
mirrors rotate in an arc, and the resulting flash rate is
normally between 40 and 100 cycles per minute. The anti-collision light is a safety
light to warn other aircraft. A cockpit switch controls each light.
b) Firewall Shut-off Valve
On an aircraft, the firewall shut-off valve is used to
close off any fluid lines going to the engine
compartment in the case of an emergency. The
valve is electrically driven to either the open or
closed position by an internal motor. An electrically
operated gate type firewall shut-off valve is located
at the firewall. This valve provides a positive shut-
off of fluids, fuel, oil and hydraulic, into the engine
compartment. When the valve is in the closed
position, no fuel will flow beyond the firewall even
if the system is pressurized with an auxiliary
pump. The indicator arm gives an additional visual
reference of the valve position and the valve is
cycled from the open to the closed positions.
c) Cargo Door
The status of the various doors on an aircraft is displayed
in the cockpit and is monitored by the flight crew. The AV-
15 cargo door switch is configured to display a secured or
unsecured status on the control panel. The cargo door on
the AV-15 has noactivation switch; instead, the switch is in
the latch receptacle. The red and green lights indicate that
the door is secured or unsecured, while the TX/REC light
indicates the polling status. The door switch receives an
open or closed query from the computer, but does not
send any data back to the main computer. In a typical
commercial aircraft, the door warning system can have
four double contact micro-switches. The first contact of the

Page |4
switch activates the Master Warning circuits and the other contact is for the
individual door. Warning that the door is not closed or unlocked is indicated by the
illumination of the Door Unlocked annunciator on the master warning panel. The
warnings will illuminate any time there is a discrepancy between door position and
the latching handle position.
d) Outside Air Temperature Probe (OAT)
On the AV-15 the current air temperature is
displayed on the outside air temperature probe
display on the control panel. This display is active
anytime that power is present on the trainer. The
display receives information from the OAT probe
which is mounted on the AV-15. The probe may
be warmed by a source of warm, not hot, air to
change the display readouts on the control panel.
Changes in the OAT display occur as the
ambient temperature changes and is an
indication of the computer polling status. The
main computer only receives information from
the probe and updates the display.

e) Control Panel
The control panel,is the interface between the
operator and the main computer.Switch positions
tell the computer what to accomplish and
indicates component status.
24VDC is carried to the control panel, through a
10-amp breaker to the master switch. In turn, the
power is distributed through the appropriate
breakers to the various components. The 24VDC
is applied to a voltage converter, which provides
5VDC to power the main computer and the
individual components' associated logic circuits.
Lights on the control panel indicate when the
24VDC is present.
There are two other switches on the control
panel. The first is for control of the beacon, on or
off. The second switch opens and closes the
firewall shutoff valve. Above each switch is a yellow TX/ REC light indicating the
polling status of the LRUS. Above the firewall shutoff valve switch, there are two
component status lights. The red light indicates that the fuel valve is closed, while

Page |5
the green light indicates that it is open. The cargo door has two indicator lights and
the polling status light. There is no switch on the main panel for the cargo door,
instead, its switch is in the door latch receptacle and indicates whether the latch is
secured or unsecured. At the top of the panel is the Outside Temperature (OAT)
display. This will show the temperature around the probe in a lighted LED pattern.
The indications will change as the ambient temperature changes and when the
computer polls the probe for any change in status.
f) Main Computer
The main computer, maintains the information
(name) for each LRU on the trainer. The computer
polls each LRU in a cycle. During the polling
process the computer requests status updates
from the LRUs as to open or closed or temperature
updates. In turn, the LRU returns an
acknowledgement signal to the computer along
with any component status information. A power
bus, separated from the data bus, powers the main
computer. The power supply is rail mounted on the
back of the AV-15 trainer. This power supply
converts the 115 VAC from the lighted single pole
AC switch on the lower left corner of the trainer's
frame to 24 VDC. The 24 VDC is also applied to a
voltage converter, which supplies 5 VDC to
thevarious components and the main computer.
24 VDC power to the Fuel Shutoff Valve and the Rotating Beacon is directed through
separate wires to the control panel, circuit breakers and switches. This 24 VDC and
the 5 VDC bus are separate from the data bus.

Page |6
Briefly explain the relevance of each equipment with one another
and how the trainer is able to demonstrate the working principle of
ARINC 429 data busses.

_Rotating beacon - is an important light that rotates and illuminates, it is driven by

an electric motor, the control panel turns the beacon on and off

-Fire shutoff valve - the valve open to stop the amount of fuel entering the engine

incase there is a fire, it is opened and closed via an internal motor and it is again

controlled by the control panel and the

communication us done via ARING 420

Cargo Door indicates a green or red light on the control panel depending on

Weather ,it is secured or unsecured, this is communicated via the ARINC 429

OAT probe measure the outside temperature, it displays the temperature on the

control panel LCD. the temperature is monitored by the probe and is communicated

to the control panel via data buses and ARINC 429.

Control Panel-

it is the interference between the aircraft systems and the user. The

computer polls each line replaceable unit in a cycle and through each cycle ask the

RU for a status update of ON / OFF.
