What are the issues brought up by Humphrys in his essay?

From the title alone, we can deduce what topic the writer is concerned about and what his
position is on that issue. The author is certain that text messages have a bad impact on our
language, in this case, English. He agrees that it is disappointing to see how many terms
have been abbreviated in spelling or in the manner they are written, such as deleting the
hyphen from nouns like pigeon-hole (pigeonhole), leap-frog (leapfrog), and so on. He is also
taken aback by the explanation for the change; due to the changes in the way we
communicate with one another, we simply do not have time to read words that are spelled
excessively long or with hyphens. However, he claims that there is another reason for these
shifts, and that is the texters themselves. He argues that texters are to blame for the
deterioration of our punctuation, spelling, and entire and accurate phrases. He asserts that
the standard language will be destroyed as a result of this.

He is against people using too many smileys or emoticons in their text messages or SMS
(Short Messaging Service). Shortened words, as previously indicated, cause the message
delivered to be incomprehensible, requiring the person on the other end to translate them,
which obviously takes longer than entering the entire term in full. Furthermore, the author
emphasizes that this occurrence will have an impact on future generations. They will
dominate in the near future, and because they are the majority of those who use ‘textspeak,'
he is concerned about what will happen to the English language in the future. He also notes
that there are people today who text all day but suddenly lose all writing ability when it
comes to writing for an exam.
