Burns from the Bunsen Ammonia (liquid)
burner Test tube clamps
1. Don all personal protective equipment including: safety glasses, & protective nitrile gloves
(where required). Ensure all loose clothing is either removed or tied back. Remove any jewelry
and tie back long hair.
2. Half fill the lower test tube with ammonia. Be careful when pouring the ammonia.
3. Make sure the collecting tube (upside down test tube) is dry.
4. Gently heat the ammonia with the alcohol burner. If it is heated too fast, the ammonia gas will
be driven off and then water vapor will start to be driven off into the collecting tube. To avoid
burns, be careful when using the burner.
5. After the ammonia starts to gently bubble, heat for one more minute.
6. Remove the collecting tube slowly and carefully so as not to disturb the gas.
7. Place a stopper upside down over the mouth of the test tube.
8. Place the test tube upside down in a bucket of water and remove the stopper. Record your
observations.
