As a registered nurse it is fundamental to have a clear understanding of reflection and

reflective practice and how to apply these standards into the nursing profession. To have

certain key skills and attributes is essential to achieve a professional nurse-patient

relationship which will be discussed throughout this essay. This essay will also communicate

reflection within a nursing environment, an overview of reflective practice and the

significance it has as a registered nurse.

Health care settings are ever-changing environments that require constant attention to

change through reflection and reflective practice. These terms appear with very similar

aspects within the nursing profession but are essentially different with reflection functioning

Reflection helps us to self-correct where the notion of continuous improvement becomes

necessary changes may be identified or made (pg 113-114). These practices are encouraged to

Studies have shown that nurses who take the time to reflect on their daily experiences provide

enhanced nursing care, have a better understanding of their actions, which in return develops

their professional skills (Hansebo & Kihlgren, 2001). Walker and Avant (1993) state that

‘reflective processes can be used to help develop clinical practice by helping you to

recognise, evaluate and refine. your personal nursing theories’ (pg 113).

Registered Nurses must adhere to specialised standards of practice from the Nursing and

Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in order to be incorporated into a respected Nursing

practice. These standards of practice from (NMBA, 2016) describe the key skills required

which includes critically thinking and analysing nursing practice, engaging in therapeutic and

professional relationships, maintain the capability for practice, comprehensively conducting

assessments, developing a plan for nursing practice, providing safe, appropriate and

responsive quality nursing practice and evaluates outcomes to inform nursing practice. To be

able to think critically and analyse nursing practice as a Registered Nurse is to be able to

make strong decisions using a variety of thoughts and evidence to provide safe quality

nursing care. It is also the ability to maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely

documentation of assessments, planning, decision making, actions and evaluations through

one’s respect and trust in order to create effective therapeutic and professional relationships.

The NMBA states that the use of delegation, supervision, coordination, consultation and

referrals in professional relationships to achieve improved health outcomes (pg 4, 2016).

Implementing reflective practice into nursing environments benefits education and

professional relationships through constant updated learning opportunities, self-evaluation

and correct application. This essay has described the reflection of thought throughout a

My overall goal I would like to successfully accomplish through Griffith University is to

become an educated Registered Nurse and Midwife. In order to accomplish this goal, I intend

to use my personal skills and attributes to my advantage whilst also obtaining additional skills

and attributes. Actively listening and learning is a significant trait I possess with education

and experience which will enable me to create personal connections with staff and patients

while additionally applying my new learnings into my nursing practice. Effective

communication is critical key skill within my career and will help increase daily operating

efficiency between staff, producing individualized care to patients and safety within the

workplace. Nurses communicate with patients and staff everyday so being able to actively

listen and learn, I can reinforce new knowledge and techniques to my nursing care and

environment.

S - To have a completed bachelor qualification in Nursing and secure a job as a registered

nurse whilst also continuing my studies to complete another qualification in midwifery.

M - For the duration of this course I would like to remain on schedule with all of my studies,

weekly content and assignments by maintaining perfect attendance in all my classes.
