Week 1 “How children Learn?”

Your perspective on early childhood

1. In your view, what are the most important ways in which young learners differ from adult
learners in the context of EFL teaching? Outline three main ways in which EFL teaching
needs to be adapted to the needs of young learners.
2. Do you like young learner? Explain the reason whether you like or not.

4. Do you have experience of teaching very young learner?

Answer

1. The difference between young learning and adult learning is that adult learners will
make the choice to learn a second language for themselves and can pay large sums of
money to do this. Even for this reason teachers can focus on teaching rather than finding
strategies to motivate an unmotivated class. While young students in this case the
teacher needs to be sensitive to this problem and plan activities appropriately. Due to
behavioral problems young learners' attention spans are much shorter. Teachers need to
include a variety of activities to keep students engaged. For this reason, the teaching
methodology ESA (engage-study-activate), is often changed in young learner circles to
EP (engage-practice). This allows for more variety of activities to help younger students
stay engaged.
And three main ways in which EFL teaching needs to be adapted to the needs of young
learners are special attention, activities that require student involvement, how to provide
material (teflcourse, 2019).

2. I like young students, why? Because young learners are a time where they learn by
playing, which means they learn by having fun, not by compulsion alone. Being a
young student also has a stronger memory than adult students, so hell can absorb more
material than adult students.

4. Yes, but for teaching efl no. I and patner teach pencak silat for young students aged 9-
14 years/ elementary school grade 4 to junior high school grade 2. In which the number
of students reaches 32 students.

6. Very important, because playing with children will be more enthusiastic and motivated
by the material provided. I think it is very possible, it is precisely in playing that
children find new pleasures, so that they better understand the material given.
7. Yes of course, let's take the example of making a conversation game in English, the
child is given some English vocabulary, then paired with his/her seatmate, after that the
students have to have a dialogue using the vocabulary as the key, after that the teacher
will choose which pair of students to choose. come forward to discuss what was
discussed earlier.
8. This will increase students' vocabulary and speaking skills, so it can be concluded that
playing can help children's language development.
